Members of the Ontario Aftermarket Retailers Association and the Ontario Automotive Aftermarket hit the links in support of AIA Canada’s High Fives for Kids Foundation.

When the day wrapped up, $10,500 was raised by more than 100 golfers at the Shelburne Golf & Country Club in Melancthon, Ontario, northwest of Toronto, on Sept. 5

The day saw pros from across the aftermarket come out, from shop owners to jobbers to manufacturers and supplier reps. They played 18 holes on a beautiful sunny day and then headed into the clubhouse for dinner and raffle draws.

Bestbuy’s Andy Murphy hosted the post-golf dinner. High Fives’ chair Ray Proulx from KYB highlighted that the foundation’s goal is to raise money for various charities that support children, often those that don’t get government funding.

There were 43 hole sponsors, plus a hole-in-one competition hosted by Federated Insurance, though no one took home the prize.

The day itself raised $9,000 with Federated adding $1,500 to the fundraising pot. Rob Hollinger gave $450 of his 50/50 winnings back to the foundation.

Vast-Auto Distribution held its annual golf tournament at the Club de Golf de l’Île de Montréal, drawing over 150 participants on August 14.

The event featured representatives from Parts City Auto Parts stores, repair shops from the M 360 Mechanic, Certified Auto Repair, Octo Auto Service Plus and Auto Mécano networks. Also in attendance were business partners, suppliers, and members of the management team.

The tournament was not only a day of enjoyable golf but also a significant fundraiser, raising $25,000 for two local charities. The funds will be donated to ALS Quebec, which supports research on ALS and provides assistance to affected families, and the Welcome Hall Mission in Montreal, which provides resources for individuals facing homelessness and other challenges.

The success of the event was attributed to the generosity of suppliers and partners, highlighting the community’s commitment to supporting important causes.

“A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this successful event,” the company said in an announcement. “Your support is making a difference in our community.”

Shad’s R&R, the top charity golf event in the Canadian automotive aftermarket, once again drew in hundreds of industry professionals for a day of raising money for charity.

Held June 13 at Woodington Lake Golf Club in Tottenham, Ontario, the 49th edition of the event brought out industry pros from across the country — and some from the U.S. This year’s event raised $175,000 for those suffering from muscular dystrophy.

On hand to receive the cheque from the volunteer board of Shad’s was Stacey Lintern, chief executive officer of Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

Money was raised by not just the 277 aftermarket pros playing a round of golf, but by raffle prizes donated by industry companies. The day included 18 holes of golf, a dinner event with a raffle and 50/50 draw. The event has now raised more than $5.7 million over its 49 years.

The keynote speech was given by Dr. Homira Osman, vice president of research and public policy at Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

Following a generous donation, Lucy and John Del Vasto are now lifetime trustees of the University of the Aftermarket Foundation.

The foundation is committed to expanding educational opportunities for the benefit of the automotive aftermarket industry.

An announcement from Groupe Del Vasto noted the couple’s commitment to social responsibility and their dedication to the future of the automotive aftermarket is demonstrated by the donation.

“We are extremely happy to give back to an industry that has been so good to us,” they said in a statement. “We are very proud of our long-term commitment to the University of the Aftermarket Foundation and the numerous recipients who will benefit from its scholarship program. Our participation will help feed our industry’s success for the foreseeable future by strengthening our aftermarket workforce.”

Since 1986, the foundation has provided funding for aftermarket education programs and research. It awards grants throughout each year, financially supporting the continued development and distribution of courses in ever-broadening areas. The rain held off for 115 golfers last week as they raised more than $10,000 for the High Fives For Kids Foundation as part of the Automotive Aftermarket Retailers of Ontario’s 2023 Annual Golf Day.

The threat of rain didn’t hold back automotive aftermarket professionals, which included jobbers, shop owners and supplier reps, who came out to the Lowville Golf Club in Burlington on Sept. 7. After the overcast sky cleared out, the sun came in and showed off the beauty of the Niagara escarpment that lay in the background of the course.

After 18 holes were played, attendees were treated to dinner and took part in the raffle.

Eric Goodman Toronto won the 50/50 draw — he then turned over his winnings of $520 to the foundation.

The golf day itself raised $8,000. Another $2,000 was donated by AIA Canada, which oversees the foundation. Federated Insurance announced at the dinner that they are also donating $1,500.

If a customer is having a ‘repair or replace’ debate in your shop, they may now have more incentive to consider scrapping their vehicle.

Kidney Car announced recently that an unwanted vehicle could net the owner a 2022 tax receipt of a minimum of $700.

“We aim to make the process as easy as possible,” said David Cybulski, managing director of Kidney Car.

Cars can be donated online at kidneycar.ca or by calling toll-free 1-866-788-2277. The group provides free towing within 48 hours and donors receive a minimum of $700 value charitable tax receipt for their donation. Newer models, in roadworthy condition, may qualify for a significantly larger tax receipt, it noted.

“Some donors have shared that their second vehicle is no longer needed, while others want to bypass the challenge of selling an older vehicle privately or are tired [of] shelling out countless dollars on repairs,” Cybulski said.

Donated vehicles are either recycled or sold. Proceeds are invested back into initiatives provide support to Canadians affected by kidney disease. The funds help with kidney research and provide support to those affected through programs and services to help ease the burden.

“It’s a win-win for The Kidney Foundation and for the donors,” Cybulski said. “Kidney Car takes care of everything, and donors are confident their car donation’s value has been maximized to support Canadian kidney patients when they need it the most.”

Continental Tire Canada is partnering with Tree Canada where it will host a tree planting event to advance clean, sustainable and carbon neutral efforts.

Through Tree Canada’s Partners in Planting program, Continental will invest in a program to support the tree planting initiative with an event.

In the announcement, Continental noted that environmental and social responsibility is a top goal of the company as it looks to be a progressive tire company. Tree Canada, it stated, is the only national non-profit organization dedicated to planting and nurturing trees in rural and urban environments across Canada in all provinces. Tree Canada has planted more than 84 million trees with their partners and sponsors.

“It is an honour and privilege to partner with Tree Canada,” said Okan Sen, Continental Tire Canada’s national marketing manager. “Through this initiative, we will be investing with Tree Canada in the future of our green spaces in our communities. Sustainability within the manufacturing plants, R&D studies such as ContiRe.Tex technology using polyester yarn obtained from used PET bottles, logistics, and extending tire life cycles to reduce waste are among our many global initiatives supporting the environment at Continental. Still, this one will be our local contribution to support the fight against climate change and our local way of giving back to nature, wildlife, and our communities.”

The tree planting event will take place in the Fall of 2022 with the participation of Continental Tire Canada employees.

Mister Transmission (International) welcomed golfers for its annual charity tournament recently.

The company hosted its 33rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament on June 18 at Markham, Ontario’s Angus Glen Golf Club. Franchisees, store support center staff, sponsors and friends made up the 60 golfers who hit the links on the sunny day.

In 2018, Mister Transmission launched the Mister Transmission Charitable Fund. It supports children and youth in local communities through charitable contributions focused on the areas of health, hardship, education and community. The fund also includes a post-secondary scholarship program. It has helped more than 20 students further their education to pursue their career goals. This year, the charity event raised $15,000 which will be given as scholarships to more post-secondary students.

The charity donated $5,000 to The Children’s Breakfast Club of Canada, which reaches more than half a million children in more than 3,300 programs throughout Canada. Rick Gosling from The Children’s Breakfast Club was presented with a “big cheque” at the event. All proceeds from the charity event go to the company’s fund.

While it was also a chance for those within the Mister Transmission family to reconnect, the company also thanked sponsors, corporate partners and all those who helped support the day.

An annual highlight on the automotive aftermarket calendar returned in fine form and bigger than ever.

Shad’s R&R, the aftermarket’s annual charity golf tournament, teed off once again on June 21 after a two-year hiatus forced by the COVID-19 pandemic at Station Creek Golf Club in Gormley, Ont. It drew 270 golfers — the most ever Brad Shaddick, son of the tournament’s namesake, Fred Shaddick, told attendees during the dinner portion of the event.

And it crossed another milestone in its pursuit of finding a cure for muscular dystrophy — it has now raised more than $5.3 million since its first event in 1973. This year’s donation totalled $170,000.

Stacey Lintern, chief executive officer of Muscular Dystrophy Canada, accepted the cheque from the Shad’s board members.

Shaddick noted that despite worries that companies may not budget for such an event coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, the response was huge. Golfers, made up of professionals from across the aftermarket, came from across Canada for the event — plus some from the United States. Even those who have retired from the industry came out for the day to show support. In all, the event had 53 sponsors and 10 double sponsors.

Shad’s was founded by a group of executives from major parts companies. It’s Muscular Dystrophy Canada’s largest single-day fundraiser.

Seven students pursuing careers in the automotive aftermarket industry have been awarded scholarships by the High Fives for Kids Foundation.

The charitable arm of the Automotive Industries Association of Canada announced the recipients will receive $700 each as part of the Arthur Paulin Automotive Aftermarket Scholarship Award.

The winners are Ayan Haqqani, Myungjin Choo, Morganna Sampson, Nicolai Paladi, Gregor Dayman, Madhavkumar Mendapara and Gedeon Ouedraogo Wendfanre.

The award is named after long-time AIA volunteer Arthur Paulin. He served on the association’s board of directors for more than nine years and as AIA president from 1965-1966. He’s the only person to serve as president twice, as he served his second term from 1967-1968.

To be eligible for the award, applicants must be enrolled in an automotive aftermarket industry-related program or curriculum at a college or university in Canada. This includes students pursuing studies as an automotive apprentice or in the auto body, hard parts, heavy-duty or motive power (machinists) sectors.

Scholarship applications for the 2022-2023 school year are now being accepted by the University of the Aftermarket Foundation (UAF).

Applicants can go to the foundation’s Automotive Aftermarket Scholarship Central website. Candidates have until March 31, 2022, to apply. Scholarships from UAF and more than 40 donor organizations are available.

In just one application, candidates — students interested in a career in the automotive aftermarket — can be considered for more than one scholarship, so long as they qualify. For this school year, one in five winners received more than one scholarship, noted said Danielle Sonnefeld, trustee and chair of the UAF scholarship committee.

“We recently awarded 427 scholarships totalling a record $706,250 for the current academic year and expect to award over 500 scholarships for the 2022-23 school year, so start your application now,” she urged.

To be considered, applicants must be planning to attend a full-time program at an accredited two or four-year college or university, or an ASE/NATEF certified post-secondary automotive, collision or heavy-duty vocational program. In addition to technician training, qualified candidates may pursue other career paths including engineering, IT/cybersecurity, sales and marketing, supply chain, accounting, finance and others.

“Since the aftermarket’s scholarship program was introduced 25 years ago, more than 5,700 students have been awarded scholarships totalling nearly $6 million,” said UAF chairman Bob Egan.  “This important program has helped make it possible for deserving young people to become the professionals and future leaders our industry needs to prosper and be competitive.”

Franchise owners, store support staff and special guests took part in the 2021 Mister Transmission Charity Golf Tournament recently.

After the 52 golfers wrapped up their 18 holes at the Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ontario, a dinner was held with live entertainment.

The highlight of the round was on Hole 10. Tony Kuczynski, president and CEO of Mister Transmission, hosted a “Beat the Boss” challenge where golfers could attempt to out-drive him on the hole. Buying an opportunity to challenge Kuczynski earned the golfer an arm’s length of raffle tickets. Successfully out-driving him, or if he put one outside the fairway, earned another set of tickets for a $300 cash prize.

Check out photos from the event below. More pictures will be added as they become available so check back in the coming days to see new ones.

After a B.C. school’s drag racing program had its tools and helmets stolen, chances of revving up the engine were just about diminished.

But not all hope was lost — it was all eventually restored thanks to donations from the racing community and the Ed Coates Memorial Foundation.

“It is a volunteer-run program in an inner-city school, so when I saw that the team’s tools and helmets were gone, I didn’t know what to do,” said Manpreet Grewal, automotive technology teacher at Frank Hurt Secondary School in Surrey, according to a news release from Lordco Auto Parts. “We have no extra budget for the program, and we are not able to do any fundraising to replace the equipment during the pandemic.”

But former team member and school alum Matt Wilkie reached out to the community for help. According to Lordco, Wilkie credited the program for igniting his passion for car. It led him to a career as an automotive technician and subject matter expert for the Industry Training Authority BC (ITA BC) and consultant for the Automotive Retailers Association (ARA).

From left, Frank Hurt Secondary School Drag Racing Program volunteer Gary Klose and automotive technology teacher Manpreet Grewal with donations to the program of helmets and tools from the Ed Coates Memorial Foundation.

“These race teams are building future racers, technicians, parts people, and other automotive-related professionals,” says Wilkie.

The program has seen success in the National Hot Rod Racing Association high school bracket, said Gary Klose, a volunteer in the program. He was the first person Wilkie contacted to say that help was on the way.

Wilkie had reached out to his friend Jessica Armstrong, Mission Raceway Park’s social media manager, former NHRA tech person, and overall racing enthusiast. She then reached out to the park’s racing community which responded with donations of tools, toolboxes and cash.

Word spread to a race helmet manufacturer. A rep shared the story with Ian Coates, vice president of sales at Lordco. The parts store knew this was something the Ed Coates Memorial Foundation (ECMF) could help with.

“It is unfortunate when theft threatens the sustainability of a program with deep roots in the community and a reputation of providing young people with a safe and supervised setting to pursue their interests,” Coates said. “On the positive side, these situations allow racing and automotive communities to come together and support the foundational elements that form our industry.”

The ECMF donated equipment, including race helmets and tools, of more than $5,000.

“Our racing and automotive community really came together for these kids,” says Wilkie.

“There is no way without the generosity of the community, the ECMF, and our volunteers that we could think of racing,” says Grewal.

The program expects to be racing again in April 2022.

The Ride for the Future motorcycle trip will be back this fall.

The Automotive Aftermarket Riders Club will head back to the highways of the desert to raise money for the University of the Aftermarket Foundation (UAF).

The ride, with the theme of “Empire Bikes Back,” will run from Oct. 29-31 just before the start of the Aftermarket Warehouse Distributors Association Conference and AAPEX, both taking place in Las Vegas.

The club will kick off the event at Eagle Rider Rentals and Tours in Las Vegas on Oct. 29. The riders will then head through Arizona with stops at Prescott, Lake Havasu City and Kingman. They will then return to Las Vegas via the Grand Canyon on Oct. 31.

“We know this will be another incredible journey and we encourage everyone to either join us in person, sponsor a rider or make a donation directly to the University of the Aftermarket Foundation,” said Mike Mohler, this year’s leader of the pack. “Our rides are always a blast, and we have experiences that we will remember for the rest of our lives. Come with us, we need your help. In the future, young children will sing songs about what we accomplished during ‘Operation Empire Bikes Back.’”

Those who are interested can rent motorcycles from Eagle Rider Rentals and Tours with an advance reservation. For more information or to learn how to become a rider or sponsor, contact Mohler at mikem@thegroupaspg.com or visit the AARC Facebook page.

It was a record-setting year for the University of the Aftermarket Foundation.

The foundation handed out $706,250 in scholarships in 2021, all with the goal of helping build a strong and knowledgeable workforce.

Recipients will be attending a two-year or four-year college or university or an accredited automotive vocational program during the 2021-22 academic year. The majority are studying to become mechanical, collision or heavy-duty repair professionals. However, others are pursuing degrees in fields such as business, engineering and IT/cybersecurity — those that will lead to a career in the automotive aftermarket.

Furthermore, many named scholarships were awarded on behalf of a variety of individuals and organizations.

Once students apply, a team of scholarship reviewers who have donated their time evaluate the applications. Recipients and schools are then notified of the award, explained Danielle Sonnefeld, the UAF scholarship committee’s chair.

In all, 427 scholarships were awarded.

“This new record shows how our industry is dedicated to helping the next generation of aftermarket professionals advance their education,” said Bob Egan, chairman of the University of the Aftermarket Foundation. “These scholarships would not be possible without the generosity of our donors. Their commitment to UAF helps ensure that the aftermarket will be in good hands today and well into the future.”

The foundation encourages industry support, including donations for the purpose of honouring or memorializing individuals or otherwise recognizing special events, to help ensure the continued availability of training and education that strengthen the industry.

Jason Miller has made many connections in the aftermarket over the last two decades.

As a sales rep for Goodyear, then as a service manager in Ancaster, in the last five years he has held two positions at NAPA Auto Parts Ontario.

He never would have imagined how these connections would come through for him in recent weeks.

On April 27, Miller’s house, which he shares with his wife, Ashley, son, Brayden (3), daughter, Alecy (six months), and their cat, was engulfed in flames. Thankfully, their were no injuries due to the fire, and the cat was rescued and returned safely by the Burlington Fire Department.

However, the fire, smoke and water damage are extensive. All of the family’s belongings were destroyed. Currently, Miller and his family have moved into a temporary residence while they attempt to get back on their feet. Unfortunately, the house that caught fire had recently been sold, with the closing date six weeks away. Miller and his family had planned to purchase their dream home in Trenton, Ont.

Faced with legal issues, insurance hurdles, and a temporary housing situation, uncertainty about their future home in Trenton, they are struggling to pick up the pieces. Immediately, his colleagues stepped up to the plate with donations of clothes, food, toys and gift cards. As the word spread across Miller’s network, A Go Fund Me page was set up last in their name, and within 24 hours the goal of $10,000 was achieved.

The Millers are blown away by how quickly his industry family rallied together to help them get back on their feet.

They are also continuing to accept donations of childrens’ clothing (boys size 4-5, 9+ month infant), toys, food, gift cards.

The annual Hope&Cope event organized by Dorval, Sources and St-Henri Auto Parts will go on this year… but in a very different form.

“Yes, things are different this year,” says co-organizer Alex Trichas, “but the need for cancer support is as stronger as ever!”

The traditional Walkathon event will this year be held on Sunday September 13th from 9am to 12pm in hundreds of locations around the country.

Groupe Dorval is encouraging participants to lace up their running shoes, and walk within their respective “bubbles” in their neighborhoods, favorite parks, and on local walking trails. Pictures and videos showing support can be posted on social media and will be shared on the company’s Facebook event page.

“As you may be aware, Hope & Cope’s Cancer Exercise and Rehabilitation Program is a beacon to anyone touched by cancer by teaching, guiding and supporting cancer-affected individuals through all stages of cancer survivorship,” Trichas said in a letter to supporters. “By participating in this virtual walkathon, you will have a positive impact on so many people with cancer; people who, with the help of Hope & Cope and your donations, learn how to exercise can help them feel stronger, both physically and mentally.”

He will be doing his walk at St-Maxime Park in Laval, Que.

“I will be glad to see you there if you want to join me for a socially distanced walk!” he wrote.

Over the past years, the charity has raised over $720,000.

The 2020 donation forms are available in both English (pasted below) and French.

Workers produce face shields at Kia Motors’ manufacturing plant in West Point, Georgia.

Kia Canada has pledged a donation of 60,000 medical-grade face shields to the Public Health Agency of Canada.

The company said the personal protective gear is intended to help equip frontline health workers.

Produced in a re-tooled section of Kia Motors’ manufacturing plant in West Point, Georgia, the donation of face shields is an extension of Kia Canada’s “Power To Give” Covid-19 relief efforts. The face shields will be allocated to Canadian healthcare workers and dispersed equitably to provinces and territories by the Public Health Agency.

This follows on the heels of Kia Canada’s donation of a $200,000 contribution to Food Banks Canada, as well as loaned vehicles to regional food banks to fight hunger relief efforts amid the pandemic.

“We are committed to giving back to the communities that we’re so proud to call home, and we’re grateful to the Kia family that we’re able to provide support with these protective face shields,” said Elias El-Achhab, chief pperating officer at Kia Canada. “We have proudly served Canadians for over 20 years, and we want to do our part to give back to our great nation. From the cobblestone streets of Gastown, B.C., to the beautiful coast of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada has our heart, and we will continue to seek ways to meaningfully make a difference,” he said.

The 2020 Stan Kingshott West Coast Classic Golf Tournament, scheduled for this summer, has been cancelled due to Covid-19.

It would have been the 34th anniversary year for the tournament, which raises money for local charities.

It was hoped that the West Coast Classic, founded by — and now dedicated to the memory of — the late Stan Kingshott would be able to be held, as communities open up again, it was deemed to be in the best interest of the tournament’s guests, sponsors, and venue personnel to cancel.

Given the struggles that charities face with this news, CARPAK and Lordco will continue to support them through volunteer opportunities and donations. If any current or past sponsor wishes to make a donation, it will be gladly accepted and forwarded on in the name of Stan Kingshott’s West Coast Classic. All donation inquiries can be sent to Brian Kingshott at Brian.carpak@telus.net.

Next year’s event is scheduled for August 9, 2021.

Liqui Moly USA is partnering with four Canadian auto repair shops to provide free oil changes to healthcare professionals.

The Germany-based oil company has announced a partnership between its Canadian division and four Alberta automotive repair shops to provided complimentary oil changes to doctors, nurses, and first responders.

“We are pleased to make a difference where and how we can,” explained Liqui Moly USA/Canada CEO, Sebastian Zelger. “Healthcare professionals are making significant sacrifices and commitments devoting countless hours and days to save so many people’s lives. At the very least, this will relieve them of one stress that might encroach on their busy lives.”

Statistically speaking, most healthcare professional will require an oil change some time during the public health emergency.

The four participating shops are Alberta Asian Motorworks, Alberta European Motorworks, German Car Specialist, and Sheni’s Auto Trend.

“We have felt fortunate over the years to have been given the opportunity to operate our business in the city of Calgary. The community has supported our business through the good times and bad,” said Zuhair Janmohamed of Sheni’s Auto Trend. “At a time like this, it gives us great pride to be able to give something back. Our local health care workers have given so much to our community. We are happy to thank them with these complimentary services.”

Healthcare professionals have already begun taking advantage of this program at participating shops.

Alberta Asian Motorworks has already provided more than 40 free oil changes for health care workers in the Red Deer area.

Healthcare professionals who want to take advantage of the offer have to call one of the four shops. Upon presenting their employee ID, they get a free Liqui Moly oil service, while supplies last.

Lordco Auto Parts has partnered with Meals for Truckers to offer food and facility services to beleaguered truck drivers across British Columbia.

The Maple Ridge, B.C.-based company is supporting the B.C. Truckers Association’s initiative to help long-haul truckers during the COVID-19 crisis with free access to food trucks and restroom facilities services.

Due to facility and restaurant shut-downs during the pandemic, professional truck drivers have had an increasingly difficult time accessing food, restrooms, and other resources while on the road. Meals for Truckers was established by the BC Trucking Association to mobilize the food truck industry to bring meals and portable washroom facilities to cardlock locations around the province. To date, Lordco has sponsored meals and facilities at locations in Chilliwack, Kelowna, and Kamloops.

“Truck drivers and the trucking industry is near and dear to us as a company,” says Sarah Durant, Lordco’s VP of marketing. “We are very happy to support this incredible program and our essential workers who do so much to deliver everything we need during this challenging time.”

“Thanks to sponsorship for meals from companies like Lordco Auto Parts, the pilot has grown into a practical and heartfelt way to let professional drivers know their work matters and is deeply appreciated,” says Dave Earle, president and CEO of the BCTA. “BCTA’s members join me in thanking Lordco for their incredible generosity, which has benefitted hundreds of truck drivers who’ve received free meals from food trucks at cardlocks in Chilliwack, Kelowna and Kamloops. We’re glad to know that people like Lordco are looking out for trucking.”

The same technology used in NRS brake pads to bind brake friction to backing plates could be used to build temporary healthcare facilities in a fraction of the time and with significant cost savings.

Canadian-based Nucap Industries – parent company of NRS Brakes – is working with Farrow Partners to put its specially developed construction blocks that can be snapped in place like Lego blocks to work during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The team’s Grip Timber Cross Laminate Blocks (GTCLB) are lightweight and as strong as cement, thanks to the ‘grip metal’ that binds small pieces of wood in place. The blocks can be rapidly assembled into any configuration, for a faster, cheaper and healthier alternative to traditional building processes.

Grip Metal is Nucap’s patented mechanical bonding system used in the production of NRS brake pads. The Velcro-like metal, with hooks that serve as an alternative to glue, has shown remarkable success in automotive braking. Nucap has produced or licenced more than a billion brake pads with zero failures, despite exposure to extreme operating conditions and temperatures.

In the Grip CLT blocks, the small wood elements are bonded with strips of Grip Metal, then processed in a pressure stamping press which applies 200 tonnes of pressure on each wood block. The process takes three seconds of pressure, allowing the Nucap facility to fabricate a thousand blocks an hour.

The team is at the ready to apply the technology to create temporary healthcare facilities.

Greg Phoenix, NAPA’s general operations manager in Vancouver, cracks the seal on a full box of N-95 protective masks from 3M.

NAPA Auto Parts in Vancouver has donated 2,100 medical-grade masks to health care professionals in B.C.

The company’s stock of N-95 disposable masks will not go to its normal automotive customers, but to a new initiative called Operation Protect set up to help distribute personal protective equipment (PPE) to health care facilities.

NAPA’s general operations manager in Vancouver, Greg Phoenix, said the need for PPE is so great, it was immediately clear where the masks should go.
“We decided to obviously do the right thing and it was to donate those,” he said in an interview with CTV News last week.

The donation was inspired in part by Phoenix’s father, who just moved to an assisted living facility.

“Very close and dear to my heart is the care facilities right now, and senior living and anything we can help is great,” said Phoenix.

Lee Coonfer, CEO of the B.C. Seniors Living Association, said hospitals, clinics, long-term care homes, assisted living facilities, and seniors’ homes are all at high risk, and the need for protective equipment is critical.

“COVID-19 doesn’t differential between the site you are at. The need is across the board. That’s why we’re doing this,” he said.

So far, more than 300 donors in the province have donated more than 318,000 items, including disposable masks, gowns, gloves, hand sanitizer, and surgical masks.

For the first time in 46 years, Shad’s R&R has been cancelled.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the aftermarket golf fundraiser for muscular dystrophy research will not be held as planned on June 11.

Board members for the annual event, told sponsors, volunteers, and participants yesterday that uncertainty over travel and social distancing restrictions had led to the decision.

“Obviously we are very disappointed about this decision,” said board chairman Brad Shaddick, “but under the circumstances, we had no other option.”

Next year’s event will be held on June 10, 2021 at Station Creek Golf and Country Club in Stouffville, Ontario.

Shad’s R&R, the aftermarket golf tournament that has raised over $5.2 million for muscular dystrophy research, now has a web page to help spread its message and raise donations.

The beautifully designed website, www.shadsrr.ca, features a wealth of information about the tournament, its beginnings, and its successes over the years.

The tournament is the largest single day fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy Canada and far and away the largest tournament in the Canadian automotive aftermarket.

Started by a small group of industry executives in 1973, SHAD’s R&R is next scheduled for June 11. Given current concerns about coronavirus, if it goes ahead as planned on that date, organizers are expecting close to 300 industry leaders from across Canada and the U.S. to set competition aside for a day to focus on changing the lives of those afflicted with neuromuscular disorders.

The Ed Coates Memorial Foundation has donated a brand-new hoist and metal lathe to the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District 42 Trades Program.

The new hoist was installed into Maple Ridge Secondary School this month. Samuel Robertson Technical will be receiving a new metal lathe soon. The equipment is valued at $25,000.

School District 42’s Trades Programs allow high school students to earn post-secondary credits and certifications as well as valuable career skills prior to graduation.

The Ed Coates Memorial Foundation, set up in memory of Lordco Parts founder Ed Coates, has also created six new scholarships and bursaries for post-secondary students across British Columbia.

New financial awards have been created at Thompson Rivers University, Camosun College, and Okanagan College, in addition to the scholarships Lordco already offers at Vancouver Community College, BCIT, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and the University of the Fraser Valley.

In financial assistance alone, Lordco now provides over $30,000 annually to students pursuing studies in automotive trades programs.

“We are so proud to be able to give back to our community and students with an interest in the automotive industry,” says Candace Gottschalk, Ed Coates’ youngest daughter and Lordco’s VP of Human Resources. “My father was an innovative business leader, and our hope is to foster that same passion our family shares for this industry.”

The Ed Coates Memorial Foundation was established in 2014.

For the second year, Fountain Tire has honoured everyday heroes across Canada through its 3 Stars program.

This season, over 60 exceptional Canadians in 21 cities received public recognition from the company and their local WHL or OHL team.

The stars were recognized for their above-and-beyond efforts to make their cities a better place.

The individuals were nominated by their peers and selected as winners of the Fountain Tire 3 Stars program, a partnership between the company, the Western Hockey League (WHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), that honours everyday Canadians for their volunteerism, humanitarianism and generosity. The winners were publicly recognized at WHL and OHL games across the country in January and February.

“We asked Canadians to help us find people whose actions – big or small – make a difference, and the result was an inspiring list of individuals who help our cities thrive,” says Denise Gohl-Eacrett, director of brand and customer experience at Fountain Tire. “It is particularly meaningful for Fountain Tire’s local store owners to be able to give the unsung heroes in their own communities the recognition they deserve.”

This year’s winners include coaches and teachers, good Samaritans, fundraisers and volunteers. One woman from Maple Ridge, B.C., stuffs and distributes hundreds of Christmas stockings to locals who are homeless. An anti-poverty activist and philanthropist from Edmonton, Alta., draws from his upbringing in a low-income household in order to champion services that help end the cycle of poverty. A Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., man has volunteered with the Canadian Ski Patrol for more than 50 years. A couple in Brandon, Man., stage an annual Halloween haunted house that has raised more than $120,000 for their local Cancer Society.

The winners were honoured by local Fountain Tire store owners and their local WHL or OHL team during exclusive game-time presentations throughout January and February.

The Specialty Equipment and Motor Association (SEMA) Memorial Scholarship fund was the big winner recently when Jeff Allen of Flat 12 Gallery got a record-breaking price for a one-of-a-kind build at the annual Barrett Jackson Auction.

All $150,000 of the purchase price went to the association’s scholarship to help young automotive enthusiasts.

After a year-long cross-country tour, at high-profile automotive events, the mix between a 1963 Volvo 122S Amazon and 2013 Grand Sport Corvette earned the highest price for a Volvo Amazon. It was also the highest-selling Volvo at auction in history!

The car packs a 600 horsepower Lingenfelter Built LS7 under the hood, and is filled with Pennzoil Synthetic motor oil.

During the auction, Allen explained why he chose the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund and how Shell and Pennzoil collaborated with Flat 12 Gallery on this project.

“When we first created the V06, we knew we had something special,” said Allen. “But without the help of Shell and Pennzoil, this vehicle wouldn’t be here today on the block fetching this much money to donate to the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was the ultimate reward.”

Allen chose the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund because of his support for upcoming groups of automotive enthusiasts. The fund offers financial assistance to help foster the next generation of automotive aftermarket industry leaders and innovators. With the proceeds of the auction going to the fund, the program can continue to assist future automotive leaders.

“Shell and Pennzoil are proud to be a part of such an inspiring build with Jeff Allen and the Flat 12 crew,” said Patty Lanning, vice president, North America Marketing, Shell Lubricants. “We’re grateful to work with incredible teams like Flat 12 and Barrett-Jackson to help generate awareness and support for the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund to help young people pursue automotive careers. Jeff’s next level creations like the V06 are proof that with collaborations like these we can drive the industry forward.”

Continental employees recently participated in an annual “Conti Cares” event that included volunteering during the holiday season and giving back to charitable organizations in the community in which they work.

“We want to create value for those who live and work near our locations,” said Jim Hill, heading Continental’s North American industrial business and based in Ohio. “Our employees recognize the value of supporting many local charitable causes especially during the holiday season. Annually, they have been generous with their time and their money. It’s just amazing to see how they all look forward to these events every year.”

On Friday, December 13, more than 60 employees (one-third of the company’s Fairlawn workforce) participated in a Conti “Day of Giving,” volunteering at three local organizations. The charitable causes included Stewarts Caring Place, a cancer wellness center in Fairlawn; The Akron/Canton Food Bank in Akron; and the Humane Society of Summit County in Twinsburg. Continental employees performed a variety of tasks all focused on helping the local organizations prepare for the holidays.

n Wednesday, December 18, employees contributed more than 3,000 pounds of non-perishable food items to the Copley Outreach Center. Last year, Continental employees donated more than 2,600 pounds of food items.

“It is just amazing to me, every year, how engaged and motivated our employees participate in these events,” said Hill. “The participation is exemplary knowing that it’s difficult to devote time and effort to any cause during this busy time of the year. We are proud of all of our Continental-Fairlawn employees.”’

Recently, on one of the coldest days Toronto has seen in a while, volunteers from NTN Canada served hot meals, and handed out clothing items and care bags for the homeless at a downtown shelter.

As part of the company’s “Let’s keep them warm for Christmas” corporate social responsibility program, NTN Canada and Applied Industrial Technologies (Central Canada Region) collaborated as a group to make warming care bags for homeless people.

The collected coats, hats, socks, mittens, scarves and food items were distributed to help the homeless stay warm this holiday season and beyond.

“We are truly fortunate to have such wonderful champions in our organizations as well as passionate industry partners who have stepped forward to donate clothing and food to help ensure we can meet our goal of distributing 100 care bags and 300 hot meals this evening to keep the homeless warm,” said Paul Meo, president and CEO of NTN Bearing Corporation of Canada.

The care packages and food items were distributed at the Haven Toronto Shelter.

“We thank the incredible staff at Haven Toronto for allowing us the opportunity to work alongside them in preparing a nutritious dinner, where hundreds of vulnerable people visit each day,” he said.

“It is wonderful to see our employees from Applied Industrial Technologies Central Canada Region and NTN banding together to support the homeless in our communities and help ensure that those in need can have access to a warm meal and clothing that will help them battle cold weather this holiday season and in the days ahead,” said Mike Allen, President, Applied Industrial Technologies.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) is partnering with the University of Waterloo to advance engineering education.

Supported by a $2.1 million investment, the largest single donation by TMMC to any Canadian University, the partnership will launch a unique undergraduate engineering innovation challenge and support a variety of student, research and outreach initiatives.

The funding for the Toyota Engineering Innovation Challenge was confirmed at the University of Waterloo today by Fred Volf, president of TMMC.

“Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada has a long history with the University of Waterloo, and we look forward to extending this partnership by further investing in their important research and education,” said Volf. “Toyota shares many of Waterloo Engineering’s research priorities, and we’re proud to be supporting them as they continue to drive engineering innovation forward.”

The Toyota Engineering Innovation Challenge will involve a half-day “take-over” of the Waterloo Engineering Ideas Clinic. In recognition of TMMC’s financial support, a wing on the third floor of Engineering 7 dedicated to faculty and student research in additive manufacturing will be renamed the Toyota Additive Manufacturing Wing.

“The University of Waterloo is proud to have Toyota as a key partner in our automotive research, as well as a long-term employer in our co-operative education program,” said Feridun Hamdullahpur, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Waterloo. “It is investments like these that have allowed our institution to undertake more automotive research than any other university in Canada.”

To reflect the company’s support in increasing diversity in the field of engineering, Outreach space on the main floor of Engineering 7 will be named the Toyota Outreach Space. TMMC will also be formally recognized as a partner in the Engineering Ideas Clinic at the Founder level. As well, TMMC will be the title sponsor of the University’s annual AutoTech Symposium for the next five years. The annual one-day event, now called the UWaterloo Autotech Symposium, presented by Toyota, brings together automotive and information technology innovators, connecting decision-makers across the converging auto and IT landscape.

“Our partnership with Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada allows our students and researchers to tackle difficult engineering and business challenges facing the automotive industry and come up with truly new and sustainable solutions that will strengthen the competitiveness of the Canadian sector,” said Pearl Sullivan, dean of Waterloo Engineering.  “Today’s gift of $2.1 million will go a long way in ensuring that we can offer them the resources and opportunities they need to make a difference.”

TMMC is a past recipient of Waterloo Engineering’s Friend of the Faculty Award. It was presented to the company in recognition of its strong commitment to joint research ventures, financial contributions to student projects and awards, and mentoring and hiring numerous alumni and students.

Fountain Tire has once again teamed up with the Western Hockey League (WHL) and Ontario Hockey League (OHL) to honour local “difference makers.”

Fountain Tire 3 Stars recognizes special people in 21 cities across Canada who go above and beyond to make their communities a better place.

Canadians can nominate their local heroes until Nov. 30, 2019.

“We’re adding to the roster of everyday citizens who support and inspire those around them,” says Denise Gohl-Eacrett, director of brand and customer experience at Fountain Tire. “We’re asking Canadians to help us find people whose actions – big or small – make a difference in their communities.”

Fountain Tire 3 Stars was created to recognize community members for their volunteerism, humanitarianism and generosity. Like the three stars awarded to players at the end of a hockey game, Fountain Tire—along with the WHL and OHL—seeks to recognize local heroes in a similar way.

Last year, Fountain Tire celebrated a broad range of difference makers including teachers, firefighters, fundraisers, hockey parents and even a city bus driver.

This fall, members of the public are invited to nominate their community stars at FountainTire3Stars.com.

“In hockey, we award 3 Stars to the top three players who had outstanding performances on the ice,” comments OHL Commissioner David Branch. “Fountain Tire 3 Stars takes that concept out of the arena and into the community, to recognize individuals who make an impact, behind the scenes, every day.”

Three winners will be selected from each participating WHL and OHL city, on the basis of nominees giving back to their community in a meaningful way. Winners will receive a WHL/OHL 3 Star Experience, including four hockey tickets, a $250 Fountain Tire gift certificate and a $200 gift certificate for the local team store. They will also be recognized in a ceremony at a local game later in the season.

“The Fountain Tire philosophy is ‘We’re on this road together,’ a sentiment that drives our actions and customer interactions each day,” says Gohl-Eacrett. “From our corporate office in Edmonton to our locally-owned stores, we believe it is important to support local communities. We bring this to life through our sponsorships of the WHL and OHL, and by supporting the local heroes that help our communities thrive.”

8941077328 – Chicago Pneumatic support breast cancer research and local communities.

Chicago Pneumatic is supporting breast cancer research and local communities with the launch of a special limited-edition impact wrench dedicated to raising vital funds.

Profits from sales of this pneumatic tool will be given out to local breast cancer research associations. It will be available in several countries, across the world, from the start of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Based on the popular CP7732C half-inch stubby impact wrench, it has been specially designed in pink and black rather than the usual red and black colors. The new model is named CP7732CBC – with the ‘BC’ standing for Breast Cancer.

“Supporting our local communities and directing our energy especially toward the individuals and families in most need, makes perfect sense to us,” says Eva Marie, Chicago Pneumatic’s global communication and brands manager. “People, passion and performance are part of our company’s DNA and brand promise. At work, it means we value relationships, encourage team building, support each customer and member of staff, and focus on achieving the best products and results for all. Going beyond those daily activities, we are there to help people in difficult times and to strengthen those going through the physical and mental fight against illness.”

Described as ChicagoPneumatic’s most compact tool, the CP7732CBC is 4.25 inches long (108 mm) and weighs just 2.2 pounds (1.0 kg). It has been selected for the breast cancer campaign because of its lightweight, easy-to-handle design. This should appeal to a wide audience, including many buyers who are not used to working with professional pneumatic tools.

Further motivation for ChicagoPneumatic’s involvement in theBreast Cancer Awareness Month campaign lies in the fact that some of its own employees are breast cancer survivors. Many staff will be taking part in local races and other fundraising initiatives.

For those visiting 2019 SEMA SHOW, the “pink tool” will be on display and Chicago Pneumatic will propose an interactive activity where people will be able to sign up for the breast cancer initiative. For each signature, Chicago Pneumatic will donate $1 to breast cancer research.

The annual Hope & Cope Walkathon organized by Dorval, Sources, and St-Henri Auto Parts is scheduled for Sept. 8 to raise funds for Hope & Cope’s cancer exercise program.

The three auto parts businesses chose to host a walkathon because it involves comparatively lower costs than a fancy dinner-dance or a golf tournament.   They are very proud of the fact that they are able to cover all of the expenses allowing 100% of the proceeds to be turned over to Hope & Cope.

This is the 12th year that they have spearheaded this annual fundraising event, last year raising $72,000 for the charity, and raising a total of more than $650,000 over the years.

Hope & Cope helps people cope with cancer with guidance from professional staff, cancer-experienced volunteers that provide psycho social support and practical resources that help patients regain a sense of control and well-being, reduced isolation and restore hope.

The 7 km walk will begin at 9:00 a.m. in St. Maxime Park, 3690 Boulevard Lévesque O, Laval, and will finish with refueling and socializing at a lively barbecue.

Kitchener’s Conestoga College is one of the 26 North American colleges to benefit from Denso’s ongoing supporting of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.

Denso has been awarding grants since 2001.

This year’s recipients will share in more than $1 million in grant money, with funds distributed based on each university’s technical merit, student experience, and alignment with industry needs.

Made possible by Denso’s philanthropic division, Denso North America Foundation (DNAF), the grants support the company’s mission to help cultivate tomorrow’s workforce delivering critical funds to programs exposing students to careers available in automotive and manufacturing.

“To achieve our 2030 goal of creating and inspiring new value for the future of mobility, we need to be inspiring our next generation of employees,” said Jack Helmboldt, president of DNAF. “By awarding grants to these educational institutions, we’re equipping students – and possible future Denso employees – with opportunities, skills, and knowledge that will help create a generation of innovators poised to transform the mobility industry.”

DNAF has supported STEM education through grants at colleges and universities since 2001, enabling students to access tools, technology, and experiences that better prepare them for technical careers after graduation.

Jagger Blake donated his allowance to take a turn swinging a sledgehammer for charity.

Eccles Auto Service turned the grand opening of its third Dundas, Ont. location into a fundraiser for St. Joseph’s Villa Foundation on Saturday.

In addition to a day of fun games and activities, over 200 community supporters picked up a sledgehammer for a charity car smash in support of Margaret’ s Place Hospice.

As a side benefit, business founder Bruce Eccles got to showcase his new six-bay garage at 123 Hatt St. in the valley town.

“Dundas is a community that cares. It’s a proud moment when you can bring people together for something that matters,” said Eccles. “To see even the little ones save up their allowance money and donate it in order to take a swing for a great cause, what more can you ask?”

Shop owner Scott Eccles said the event raised $1,545 for the new hospice, which is set to begin construction soon.

“People know when they come to Eccles Auto Service, we aren’t just servicing their vehicles, we’re helping families and our community enjoy their best life,” said Scott.

Don Davidson, president and CEO of the St. Joseph’s Villa Foundation, said creative ideas like the car smash are a great way to raise awareness and money for community needs.

“We’re always open to new creative ideas like Bruce and Scott’s,” said Davidson. “Once Margaret’s Place opens, our foundation is responsible for funding a significant portion of hospice operations. Having community members who care enough to get involved will help us support more patients and families.”

The event drew such a positive response that Eccles Auto Service has decided to make it an annual event.

Before you smash a car, you have to paint it, right? Local kids get Eccles Auto Service ready for their Smash Event on July 6.

Want to raise money for a good cause, but think a car wash is too boring? You could take a page from Dundas shop owner Bruce Eccles’ playbook.

He and his team are inviting customers to pay $5 to smash a Kia with a sledgehammer.

Bruce Eccles helps the “Routes Youth” paint the Kia.

It’s part of the launch of the third location of Eccles Auto Service in Dundas, Ont. Funds will be donated to the local Margaret’s Place Hospice at St. Joseph’s Villa.

Margaret’s Place will bring 10 hospice beds to Dundas and a community outreach centre that will provide grief and bereavement support to patients of all ages and their families.

Eccles and his team have long supported local causes, including Routes Youth Centre, a local organization that provides youth ages 8-19 a safe and caring space for educational, recreational programs. “Routes Youth” are participating in this event by painting the Kia in preparation of the smashing.

“We’re grateful for Bruce’s ongoing support,” says John van Vliet, chairman of the Routes Youth Centre board of directors.  “It’s innovative events like this that characterize Dundas spirit.  Bruce’s event is a five-way win – the hospice gains much-needed funds, our community gets more hospice capacity, Routes youth get to volunteer, Routes Youth Centre gets a donation, and participants – well, they get to smash a car!”

So, why a car smash instead of the traditional car wash?  “That’s easy,” Bruce laughs.  “It’s way more fun!”

The smash for cash will take place July 6, at 123 Hatt Street in Dundas, from 10 am to 3 pm.

Mister Transmission suppliers and franchisees raised over $15,000 for the company’s charitable fund at the 31st annual Mister Transmission Charity Golf Tournament on Friday.

Held at King’s Riding Golf Club in King City, Ont., more 80 golfers enjoyed a day on the links, in beautiful summer weather, raising money for children and youth in the franchisees’ local communities.

The funds will support a variety of initatives from a health, hardship, and education and community perspective.

“We raised more money this year than we did last year, and we’re very proud of that,” Mister Transmission president and CEO Tony Kuczynski said. “So, thank you all.”

The $15,000 raised included $1,500 raised in a “Beat the Boss” competition, a recent tradition for the golf day, in which players tried to hit a ball closer to the pin than Kuczynski could.

“It was a lot of fun for me, because I get to meet everyone on the golf course,” Kuczynski said. “Fortunately for those who played against me, a lot of my drives ended up in the drink. I obviously need some practice.”

At dinner after the tournament, everyone received a prize, special trophies were handed out to winning golfers, and Kuczynski made a point of thanking the tournament’s many sponsors.

“These events wouldn’t raise near the same amount of money without their generous help,” he said.

Sponsors of this year’s event were: Converter Man Ltd.; Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association (ATRA); King-O-Matic; Minken Employment Lawyers; Osler, Hoskin, and Harcourt LLP; Vast Auto; Web Punch; Fiduciary Trust International; and Shore Consulting Group

Aftermarket golf tournament's cumulative total since 1973 stands at just shy of $5.2 million for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

Shad’s board members (from left, Shawn Keogh, John Vanstone, Mike Fazackerly, Ken Coulter, Dave Fifield, Bill Blair, Steve Gushie, Brad Shaddick, Ray Osika, Luc Champagne, and Mike Holland) unfurl the banner with Shad’s cumulative total raised since 1973.

The CEO of Muscular Dystrophy Canada says after decades of hard work, the victory over the debilitating muscle disease is just around the corner thanks to generous donations like the one from Shad’s R&R, the aftermarket’s annual charity golf tournament.

This year’s tournament — a fixture in the Canadian aftermarket events calendar — was held yesterday at Station Creek Golf Club in Gormley, Ont. It raised another $150,000, bringing the cumulative total since 1973 to just shy of $5.2 million.

Barbara Stead-Coyle, CEO of Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

On hand to receive the donation, MDC CEO Barbara Stead-Coyle told the golfers of the remarkable advances being made in drug and gene therapy.

“We are on the cusp of something remarkable,” she said. “And we wouldn’t be here without all of you. The journey is not yet over, but we are so much closer to the goal line.”

Most notably, she spoke of the association’s recent efforts to make a relatively new but expensive drug available to Canadians who suffer from spinal muscular atrophy. The drug, Spinraza, was approved by Health Canada, but other government agencies have created some restrictive conditions governing its use.

“We’ve been going province by province by province, lobbying to make this drug available,” she said. “We’ve been on this journey for two years. We won our first battle in Quebec. We won our second battle in Saskatchewan, and last night [June 12] we won the battle here in Ontario. Patients in those provinces will now have access to this life-changing drug. And there will be more coming behind those. That is the power of what you do.”

Danielle Campo-McLeod

Golfers also heard from Danielle Campo-McLeod, a Paralympian swimmer, MDC spokeswoman, and a mother of four. She told how money raised through charities like Shad’s impacts people like her. Diagnosed with muscular dystrophy when she was young, it was assumed she would not live long, and would certainly never be able to bear children. With medical help, she has defied those odds, and has given birth to two children.

“Golf tournaments like this, and people like you raise money so that we can do the research that can improve the lives of people living with muscular dystrophy. That’s what you do,” she said. “On the days that muscular dystrophy steals my joy, you put it back because I know you won’t stop fighting until we find a cure.”

Brad Shaddick, son of the tournament’s namesake, Fred Shaddick, said nothing would make the Shad’s board happier than finding out that the disease has been finally defeated.

“It would be great if we could make the announcement that we’re going to have to switch to a new charity because they’ve found a cure for MD,” he said.

A full slate of over 250 golfers started the day – though few finished all 18 holes, due to steady rain that swamped some of the greens.

As always, the board kept costs to a minimum and focused on the goal of raising money for muscular dystrophy research.

The aftermarket golf tournament that was founded in 1973 by a group of executives from major parts companies. Over the years, Shad’s R&R has grown into Muscular Dystrophy Canada’s largest single-day fundraiser, and is an annual highlight for hundreds of aftermarket professionals.

Next year’s event will be held on June 11, 2020, again at Station Creek in Gormley.

Former CARS contributor Rick Cogbill, author of the popular Car Side column, is looking for automotive technicians and shop owners who want to donate time and equipment to change lives in the developing world.

Cogbill is the founder and mission director of Mercy Tech Mission, an organization that teaches skilled trades to people in a handful of nations where the only escape from poverty is through innovation and hard work.

“Our purpose is to take trained trades people out into developing countries and teach the skills that we’ve been given to people that don’t have access to those kind of skills,” he said.

He has suspended the Car Side column while he concentrates on increasing the scope and visibility of Mercy Tech Mission, recruiting volunteer instructors, and putting donated tools and equipment to good use in Africa and Baja Peninsula.

Using a combination of classroom teaching and hands-on learning, Mercy Tech has provided skills training in areas such as automotive mechanics, carpentry and wood turning, welding, electrical, machining and concrete work.

“The mission started in 2011. We make about four or five  trips a year, and our volunteers have come from all across Canada,” Cogbill said. “We would love to see more shops take us on as monthly donors, as part of their social responsibility program. The funds raised would be put to good use.”

Mister Transmission’s 31st annual charity golf tournament will take place Friday, June 21, with franchisees being involved in deciding how the funds will be distributed.

Last year, the company launched a new charitable fund with an eye to supporting causes that are meaningful to its franchisees and their local communities.

Last year’s even raised over $13,000, which was used to support community-based charities as suggested by Mister Transmission franchisees and specialists. Among them:

  • Retrofitting a van for a disabled youth in North Bay, Ont.;
  • Repairing the transmission of a delivery truck used by a community youth program in Etobicoke ;
  • Providing a holiday donation to the Kawartha Food Bank in Peterborough, Ont.; and
  • Giving away three scholarships for post-secondary education to Mister Transmission families.

Last year president and CEO Tony Kuczynski told the golf tournament’s 72 golfers, “We’ve raised a lot of money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and provided a lot of support, and we will continue to support them. But we also want to support some other causes that are near and dear to the hearts of our franchisees.”

The Mister Transmission Charitable fund focuses on health, education, welfare and community projects for children and youth.

The 31st annual golf tournament will include a silent auction and prizes at the King’s Riding Golf Club, King City, Ont. Shotgun start at 8 a.m. sharp.

Twenty-four years after the late John H. MacDonald received the Canadian automotive aftermarket’s highest award, his son, John MacDonald Jr., has been given the same honour.

The Automotive Industries Association of Canada presented its prestigious Distinguished Service Award to John MacDonald at its annual general meeting in Mississauga, Ont. on May 8.

“For me to be listed on the same sheet of paper as my father is something that I’ll cherish for a lifetime,” he said.

MacDonald served for 35 years at Ideal Supply Company, the Listowel, Ont.-based company that his father purchased in 1968 and turned into a regional jobber network.

The AIA Distinguished Service Award recognizes outstanding service and leadership, which contributes to the growth and development of Canada’s automotive aftermarket industry. It is the highest award presented by AIA Canada to an individual member.

MacDonald said he enjoyed the time he spent working with AIA over the years, traveling the country and working with manufacturing and distribution members.

“I’ve met some terrific individuals over the years, many of whom became good friends and helped me in my job with Ideal Supply,” he said.

He also gained a true appreciation of the value of networking when he served as chairman of the association’s executive committee and got an inside view of the association’s work.

“As one, we truly are stronger in a market that is so vast. When we work together, we get things done,” he said. “AIA allowed a company in Listowel, Ont. to have a unified voice to make real change. I expect would not be the company we are today, in many ways, if we weren’t engaged with this association.

From left, Brad Cochrane, Paul Prochilo, Shannon Spano.

Also at the annual general meeting, Paul Prochilo, CEO of Simplicity Car Care, received the Young Leader of the Year Award, presented by the Young Professionals in the Aftermarket (YPA) committee

“This is an exceptional honour on a number of different counts,” he said. “But I will say, firstly, that to still be considered young is probably the biggest component.”

He described the entire AIA staff as “an asset to the aftermarket space,” providing resources for the advancement of young leaders in the aftermarket.

“Leadership is not a one-time event,” he said. “It is demonstration of consistently putting others in front of oneself. I may be here today as the recipient, but everyone in the aftermarket can be a force for change and advancement.”

AIA Canada also recognized those that have made outstanding contributions to the AIA High Fives for Kids Foundation. Awards were given out to the individual, company and AIA division that demonstrated an exceptional commitment to fulling the Foundation’s mission of bringing positive change and improvements to the quality of life for children and youth in their local communities.

The recipients of the recognition awards were:

Individual – Ken Coulter, President, Specialty Sales and Marketing

Company – Vast Auto

Division – AIA Canada Ontario Division

High Five for Kids award recipients, from left, Ken Coulter, Tony Del Vasto (receiving the award from Ray Proulx on behalf of Vast Auto) and Joe Mercanti (receiving the award from Ray Proulx on behalf of the AIA Ontario Division).

Organizers of the annual “Shad’s R&R” golf tournament for charity expect to sell out both 18-hole courses at Station Creek Golf & Country Club in Gormley, Ont.

It would be a record number for the aftermarket event that raises money for muscular dystrophy research.

This year’s event, the 46th in its history, will tee-off June 13 with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.

Shad’s has raised more than $5,000,000 so far and has been a staple of the automotive aftermarket social calendar since it was founded in 1973. It is the biggest single-day fundraiser in the Canadian automotive aftermarket and routinely draws over golfers from automotive companies across the country and the United States.

This event was first initiated by Fred Shaddick and a group of aftermarket professionals in 1973 after skipping work to play golf.  Wagers placed throughout the day were donated to a worthy cause and the Annual Shad’s R&R golf tournament was born. The “R and R” stands for “Remorse and Regret.”

“A contribution of $5 million for a charity of our size is remarkable,” said Barbara Stead-Coyle, CEO of Muscular Dystrophy Canada, at last year’s event.

“They have gone above and beyond with their donations of high-quality tools and equipment to all of our secondary schools,” he said, adding that the donations “have enhanced these programs immeasurably.”

The foundation was started by the family of Ed Coates, Lordco’s co-founder, after his sudden death in 2014 in order to carry on his legacy through supporting local communities.

A new partnership between Fountain Tire, the Western Hockey League (WHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) will honour 60 Canadians for their contributions to their communities.

The Fountain Tire 3 Stars program will recognize local ‘stars’ who go above and beyond to make their communities better places.

“We’re searching for unsung heroes across the country,” says Denise Gohl-Eacrett, director of brand and customer experience at Fountain Tire. “We want to hear about the people whose actions – big or small – make a difference in their local communities.”

The game-time presentations will recognize everyday Canadians for their volunteerism, humanitarianism and generosity.

“In hockey, three stars are awarded traditionally to the top three players who had outstanding performances on the ice,” explained WHL commissioner Ron Robison. “Fountain Tire 3 Stars takes that concept and goes outside of the arena to recognize outstanding achievements in the community. The Fountain Tire 3 Stars program is an excellent way to recognize those individuals who make a tremendous impact, behind the scenes, in the community.”

Three winners will be selected from each participating WHL and OHL city:

Kamloops, B.C.

Kelowna, B.C.

Prince George, B.C.

Vancouver, B.C.

Victoria, B.C.

Calgary, Alta.

Edmonton, Alta.

Lethbridge, Alta.

Medicine Hat, Alta.

Red Deer, Alta.

Moose Jaw, Sask.

Prince Albert, Sask.

Regina, Sask.

Saskatoon, Sask.

Swift Current, Sask.

Brandon, Man.

Barrie, Ont.

London, Ont.

Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

Sudbury, Ont.

Winners will be honoured by local Fountain Tire store owners during an exclusive game-time presentation. Winners will also receive a prize pack that includes a $250 Fountain Tire gift card, a hockey jersey from their local WHL or OHL team, and other Fountain Tire 3 Stars merchandise.

“The Fountain Tire philosophy is ‘We’re on this road together,’ a sentiment that drives our actions and customer interactions each day,” says Gohl-Eacrett. “From our head-office in Edmonton to our locally-owned stores, we believe it is important to support local communities. We bring this to life through our sponsorships of the WHL and OHL, and by supporting the local heroes that help our communities thrive.”

Lubrication Specialties Inc. raised nearly $6,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation through a special promotion sponsored by the company’s Hot Shot’s Secret brand.

The company donated $50 to NHRDA driver Amalee Mueller’s “Save the Racks” fundraising campaign for each successful pass made in either of Mueller’s two “Save the Racks” trucks driven throughout the 2018 race season.

In addition, Lubrication Specialties Inc. donated a $250 bonus for each runner-up finish and a $500 bonus for a class victory at each NHRDA event.

Amalee Mueller with her mom, the inspiration for her “Save the Rack” fundraiser.

Last year Mueller branded her Dodge Cummins Super Diesel race truck in a pink Save the Racks motif to support her mother who has successfully battled breast cancer. Early this year, she also branded a second Save the Racks truck, a Chevrolet S-10, driven by Larson Miller.

“We are incredibly excited to report a donation of $6,000,” said Kyle Fischer, Lubrication Specialties Inc. director of marketing. “We fully support Amalee in her efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer and look forward to continuing these efforts this year.”

He said it was gratifying to see the Save the Racks trucks raising awareness about breast cancer research. Many race fans also stopped by the Hot Shot’s booth to say they wanted to help the campaign.

“Almost everyone has a family member or close friend that has been touched by breast cancer,” he said. “This was one small way we could help.”

Lubrication Specialties Inc. is the manufacturer of Hot Shot’s Secret performance fuel and oil additives and Adrenaline race oil

The Ed Coates Memorial Foundation has created two scholarships for automotive students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, in the Vancouver area.

The True Leadership Award will provide $1,000 to a student in the Automotive Parts, Warehousing, Logistics and Distribution Foundation or Level 1 Apprenticeship programs – an additional $2,000 bursary was also created for the group. Another $1,0000 will be for a student in the business program at KPU.

The foundation, which was started by the Lordco co-founder’s family following his sudden death in 2014, has donated $23,000 to fund the awards for upcoming years.

This is the second round of donation announcements made this year by the foundation. In June, two leadership awards were created for automotive students at the University of Fraser Valley, in Abbotsford, B.C.

“We take immense pride in granting these scholarships and bursaries. The purpose is to provide individuals in the automotive and business fields with assistance to build a successful career in an industry we have so much pride in,” said Candace Gottschalk, Coates’ daughter and vice president of Human Resources for Lordco Auto Parts. “My father was an innovative business leader and our hope is for others to have the same passion our family shares for this business.”

The foundation is supported by various fundraising initiatives by Lordco, as well as local community events.

Mevotech is one of the newest members of the University of the Aftermarket Foundation’s lifetime trustees.

The Toronto-based supplier joined a handful of other aftermarket companies in the recognition as part of Automotive Warehouse Distributors Association’s (AWDA) luncheon held Oct. 29 at The Venetian in Las Vegas, the day before AAPEX opened its doors.

Mevotech CEO Ezer Mevorach and executive vice president of sales and marketing Todd Hack accepted the appointment on behalf of the company.

Genuine Parts Company, MAM Software Group, The Schwartz Family, Women in Auto Care and the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA) were also recognized as lifetime trustees. National Pronto Association was named a gold lifetime trustee.

“For over 30 years the University of the Aftermarket Foundation has provided funding for aftermarket education programs and research,” Hack in an announcement.  “We are proud and honoured to be a part of The Foundation, assuring that education and research will have a strong impact on our rapidly evolving and complex industry.”

“On behalf of the University of the Aftermarket Foundation, we welcome Mevotech as a lifetime trustee and thank Ezer Mevorach for his unwavering support of our mission to provide scholarships and educational opportunities to talented students pursuing careers in the aftermarket,” said Bob Egan, chairman of the foundation. “We also want to express our gratitude to Todd Hack for volunteering his time to represent Mevotech on the UAF board of trustees. Without the generosity of fine organizations like Mevotech, the University of the Aftermarket Foundation would not be able to help hundreds of talented students each year achieve their educational goals.”

The gold lifetime trustee recognition is reserved for those donating $250,000-$499,999 to the foundation. Those who donate $100,000-$249,999 are designated lifetime trustees.

The AASA’s donation will be turned into the Steve Handschuh Educational Fund, named after the retiring president and chief executive officer of the association’s parent group, the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association.

“What a wonderful way to honour an industry leader for his long, successful aftermarket career,” Egan said.

“It is fitting to recognize Steve’s passion, dedication and service to the aftermarket to establish this fund to help support and attract new people to our industry,” said Bill Long, AASA president and chief operating officer and MEMA executive vice president, government affairs. “Steve’s career is marked by his devotion to the most important element of our industry’s success – its people. This fund will serve as a lasting tribute to him and as an investment in the future of the aftermarket.”

Aftermarket golfers raised $21,000 for the Charitable Foundation of Carquest and Worldpac (Canada) on Tuesday (Aug. 28).

The annual event, hosted by Carquest Canada and Worldpac Canada staff at the Springfield Golf and Country Club in Guelph, Ont., drew 150 golfers.

Jason Yurchak, senior vice president, Worldpac Canada, thanked those who turned out.

“We raised $21,000 here today,” he said, “and we’re really proud that all of that money goes back into the community, so thank you all.”

Proceeds from the tournament go to a wide variety of charities, most notably the Toronto Children’s Breakfast Club.

This year, golfers heard about another charitable endeavour, the Crane Lake Discover Camp in MacTier, Ont.

Trevor Martin, a members of the camp’s board of directors, told how the wilderness therapeutic program benefits troubled boys aged 10-15.

Trevor Martin of the Crane Lake Discovery Camp, tells aftermarket golfers how the camp helps troubled boys become productive members of society.

“Our goal is to help raise boys into young men who are contributing members of society,” he said. “We want to help the reintegrate back into society in a positive way.”

The camp was started in 2004 on 2000 acres bordering on the Massasauga National Forest, on the west tip of Crane Lake where it spills into the Blackstone River. Although it only runs summer programs right now, the camp would like to expand within five years to a year-round program.

Money donated by Carquest and Worldpak will help with infrastructure upgrades to make that possible.

The golf day featured giveaways, a silent auction, and a chance to “beat the boss” (Steve Gushie, president of Carquest Canada) on the first tee.

“Someone asked me what the course was like,” Gushie quipped when addressing the golfers at dinner, “and I had to say, ‘I have no idea. In 12 years, I’ve only ever been out on the first tee!’”

He said the company truly appreciates the support it has received from the automotive aftermarket.

“The money we raise here helps grow and strengthen our communities,” he said. “So this means an awful lot to us.”

The Automotive Industries Association of Canada’s charitable foundation has given a new look to its website.

A new bilingual High Fives for Kids Foundation website has been created to give an updated look and brand refresh. The more user-friendly site, “will better serve the members of the aftermarket in their giving endeavours and acknowledge the grantees and local charities that work with children and youth,” the AIA said in an announcement.

Furthermore, the site also has new information that explains a new granting application process and funding cycles.

“To stay current and relevant, we believe it is necessary to provide a website with more available resources and information. This is also a timely launch because we’ve introduced a new format for grant applications,” said Luciana Nechita, the foundation’s executive director.

The foundation was founded in 2005 and focuses on supporting charities through grants and scholarships that benefit children and youth.

“We are committed to creating brighter futures for Canadian children and youth by giving them the tools, opportunities, and support they need,” said KYB America’s Ray Proulx, the foundation’s chairman. “The projects we fund provide training, equipment, experiences, and assistance so that young people can reach their full potential.”

Tony Kuczynski announces the new Mister Transmission Charitable Foundation at the company’s annual golf tournament.

Mister Transmission (International) has launched a new charitable foundation, seeded with a $25,000 donation from head office, to support a wide variety of causes suggested by franchisees.

The Mister Transmission Charitable Foundation was announced at the company’s annual golf tournament, where a further $13,450 was raised for the new fund.

President and CEO Tony Kuczynski told the 72 golfers who attended the 30th annual event, held last week at King’s Riding Golf Club in King City, Ont., that the focus would be to support children and youth in the areas of health, hardship, education, and community initiatives.

“We’re very excited about supporting the local communities of our franchisees and the causes they feel strongly about, and getting their support for our fundraising efforts in return,” he said. “We expect to be able to raise a lot more money if our franchisees are more engaged.”

Mister Transmission and its franchise outlets across the country have long supported the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

“We’ve raised a lot of money for CBCF and provided a lot of support,” Kuczynski said. “And we will continue to support them. But we also want to support some other causes that are near and dear to the hearts of our franchisees.”

The Richmond Hill, Ont.-based company has 60+ transmission shops in its national network.

"You have relit the spark of hope for our families. I cannot thank you enough," says the CEO of the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada.

The post Shad’s tops $5 million for muscular dystrophy research appeared first on Auto Service World.

Barbara Stead-Coyne, CEO of Muscular Dystrophy Canada, accepted this year’s donation from the Shad’s R&R golf tournament from Brad Shaddick.

The CEO of Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada (MDC) says Shad’s R&R — the aftermarket golf tournament that has raised over $5 million for muscular dystrophy research — is giving hope to many Canadian families touched by the disease.

“We are on the precipice of the new world in neuro-muscular disorders. That’s what your $5 million has done,” Barbara Stead-Coyle told over 250 golfers who played at this year’s event at Station Creek Golf Club in Gormley, Ont. “You have relit the spark of hope for our families. I cannot thank you enough.”

Stead-Coyle received this year’s donation of $175,000, saying it would be put to good use fighting the disease and helping families affected by it.

“The good news is that for the first time ever there are new treatments coming to the market. We have a remarkable drug called Spinraza for SMA (spinal muscular atrophy) children. The cost is $750,000 a year. Not paid for by the government. Muscular Dystrophy Canada is there. We are in government offices every day, lobbying, advocating, fighting for these children.”

Also on hand to thank the Shad’s golfers was Dr. Cynthia Gagnon, associate professor at the faculty of medicine and health sciences at the University of Sherbrooke.

Marlyn Coates, Sarah Durant, Ian Coates and Candace Gottschalk of the Ed Coates Memorial Foundation (ECMF) presented a donation of $37,500 to the University of the Fraser Valley, which was received by Rolf Arnold, Sherri Magson, and Sheila Reimer.

The Ed Coates Memorial Foundation has created and will fund two new leadership awards for automotive students at the University of Fraser Valley, in Abbotsford, B.C.

The award will provide $1,500 a year to one student in the Automotive Service Technician program and another in the Automotive Collision Repair program. The foundation – started by the Lordco co-founder’s family following his sudden death in 2014 – has donated $37,500 to fund the awards, the largest number it has given to date. The amount will be matched by the university.

“In funding these awards, we hope that Ed’s entrepreneurial legacy will live on in the businesses that are founded by individuals who have benefitted from the foundation’s support,” said Candace Gottschalk, Coates’ daughter and vice president of human resources at Lordco. “Ed was an innovative business leader and born entrepreneur who guided his company through difficult economic times and firmly established Lordco as a leader in the automotive industry.”

“We very much appreciate this investment in the future of our automotive students by a foundation that honours Ed Coates, an admired leader in the industry in B.C.,” said Rolf Arnold, associate dean of applied and technical studies at the university.

It was a quadruple anniversary for Auto Centre Dufferin County in Shelburne, Ont. this weekend.

The shop is celebrating 20 years in business.

It’s been 15 years since they moved into their new premises.

It’s been 10 years since they were the SSGM Shop of the Year.

And it was owner Steve Bowles’ birthday weekend.

It definitely seemed like the right time for a party, so they held a customer appreciation day, with an open house and barbecue lunch.

Canadian race car driver DJ Kennington recently paid tribute to the victims of the Humboldt bus crash tragedy.

He raced at the NASCAR’s Bristol Motor Speedway with the team logo emblazoned on his hood. The St. Thomas, Ont. native told the London Free Press that he spoke to racing team owner Marty Gaunt of Gaunt Brothers Racing and got the green light.

But that wasn’t enough – Kennington and crew members signed the hood and auctioned it off to raise money.

That’s when long-time sponsor Castrol Canada stepped in with the highest bid — US$15,000 raised and donated to the Humboldt GoFundMePage campaign, which raised more than $15 million. That’s the highest fundraising initiative in Canadian history on the site.

“We have been a proud supporter of DJ Kennington for over 20 years — when he told us that Gaunt Brothers Racing was donating the hood to raise funds and that the racing team all signed the hood, we immediately wanted to be part of the initiative,” said Natalee Davis, marketing manager, sponsorships and promotions at Wakefield Canada, the Canadian distributor of Castrol products.

“Donating the funds and giving the hood to the Broncos is our way of sharing with the team that, regardless of what sport we participate in, we all felt the tragedy and want them to know we are with them as they heal. Our customers have also taken part in donations for this cause and this is truly a dedication on behalf of the automotive and racing community.”

This past September, Quebec-based Dorval Auto Parts celebrated their 10th anniversary walkathon on behalf of Hope & Cope’s cancer exercise program.

Alex Trichas, co-owner at Dorval Auto Parts, and cousins Nick, Chris and Andre Dimopoulos, along with friend Gus Anagnostaras created this event to raise awareness to cancer patients and survivors and give other people the chance to be a part of the cause.

Over 200 people come to the walkathon every year where they can enjoy being with family, taking a 7 km walk for the cause, followed by BBQ foods, and raffle prizes. The event takes place at Parc St-Maxime in Chomedey, Laval.

“We always tell people, ‘You don’t even have to finish the walk – just come and enjoy yourself,” Chris said. “While people come for the family atmosphere and the free food, after so many years, they are familiar with Hope & Cope and pleased to support the cause.”

“We’re transparent about how much is raised and our event is very cost-effective. That’s why our customers, suppliers, employees, corporate sponsors, family and friends are always there for us,” Alex said.

The family is passionate about their cause and are moved by the courage of cancer survivors who often join in on the walk. “Knowing that patients are motivated to do the walk spurs us on even more,” Andre said.

After hosting their 10th anniversary walk, Alex, Nick, Chris, Andre and Gus were able to present a $69,000 cheque to Hope & Cope’s Board of Directors.

“Speaking on behalf of the entire Hope & Cope family, we thank you for your outstanding and sustained commitment to our cause,” said Suzanne O’Brien, chair of Hope & Copes’ board of directors.

The next Dorval Auto Parts walkathon will be September 9, 2018. For more information click here.

Aspiring technicians in Montreal are getting a boost thanks to a donation from Vast-Auto Distribution.

Tools, parts and equipment totalling $210,000 were donated to l’École des métiers de l’équipement motorisé de Montréal, an automotive trades school.

The announcement was made under the radar as part of the company’s annual convention in Montreal Feb. 16-18.

“There is always a demand for gifts for students,” said Patrick Dubois, who spearheaded the project, with help from Roger Goudreau at the AIA Quebec division. “I thought it was good to offer something different to stand out from other networks while helping the school and students. At the industry level, there is also a need to enhance the image of the aftermarket. We often talk about dealers in schools, that’s fine, but we in the aftermarket are often forgotten. We need to have a better presence.”

For the school, it’s a considerable gift.

“This is so much material that we will not need to buy. There are tools that are new,” said the school’s director Serge Gauthier.

The school gifts $10,000-$15,000 in tools every year for automotive students from vocational training centres across the city as part of a special gala every June. “We will have a supply of gifts to offer for many years because we have new pallets and tool pallets.”

The school typically gets about 10 damaged cars each year, typically from General Motors, valued at about $5,000 each, Gauthier said. The donation of tools from Vast-Auto is the biggest it has ever received, Gauthier said.

For Vast-Auto, according to Dubois, it’s the largest donation of this type the company has ever made.

Customers of the auto parts distributor went above and beyond to deliver gifts for children and their families who won't be home for Christmas

Ideal Supply is trying to bring some holiday cheer to children and their families.

On Nov. 25, the auto parts distributor and electrical supplier partnered with Shell Lubricants to raise donations for Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. In the end, thousands of dollars in gifts were donated to help make kids and their families who will spend Christmas away from home a little easier.

Over a six-month period, Ideal Supply customers who grew their purchases of Shell lubricants would get the chance to head to Toronto for a special event. With some dinners included, the customers who made the trek were given spending money to shop and buy gifts in the city to be donated. But the customers then decided to go above and beyond as they spent their own money to add to the toy collection that was delivered to the hospital.

“There were over $9,000 in gifts provided that will go towards the hospital toy drive,” said Peter Mackie, marketing co-ordinator at Ideal Supply in Listowel, Ont.

It was the first time Ideal Supply has donated to SickKids. They typically donate to local charities but the company decided to add to their giving initiatives this year. Mackie said that when word got around about the program, customers responded by making sure they did what they could to be part of it.

“Thank you to our clients and Shell who embraced the true spirit of Christmas and will make Christmas morning a little brighter for someone who will not be home for the holidays,” said John MacDonald, Ideal Supply’s vice president of sales and marketing.

In all, 38 people participated in the weekend event with more gifts dropped off than the bins could hold.

The day before, the 18th Annual Sunday Monks for High Fives for Kids was held at the Northview Golf and Country Club in Surrey, B.C.

Held since 2005, 48 golfers teed off to raise money for the High Fives for Kids Foundation. An east coast version of the event is held earlier in the summer with both events combining to raise about $8,000 for the charity, which provides grants and scholarships to children in need throughout Canada. Conestoga College, in Kitchener, Ont., and the University of Guelph are among 22 institutions across North America that will receive grants from the Denso North America Foundation (DNAF).

The foundation funds programs that providing hands-on learning opportunities in a variety of fields ranging from robotics and thermodynamics to design and materials development.

The DNAF board confirmed its 2017 college and university grants, doling out nearly $1 million in funding to 22 institutions and educational programs across North America.

The 2017 grants are intended to help prepare students to join the manufacturing industry’s growing skilled trade workforce.

“Innovation throughout the manufacturing industry will continue to produce more growth opportunities for students in skilled trades and technical fields,” said Doug Patton, president of the Denso North America Foundation and executive vice president of Engineering at Denso International America, Inc. “Companies will lean on this young workforce for years to come, and in order to succeed we need to empower students by giving a better sense for what they’ll experience in the workplace.”

David Cole, Denso North American Foundation board member, said, “The automotive industry relies more and more on those with expertise in fields like robotics and electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. Supporting STEM education enables Denso to develop the next generation of talent needed to fill these roles. It also helps students find ways to translate their passion and skills into opportunity after graduation.”

Since 2001, the DNAF has advanced the auto industry through grants to colleges and universities, providing students with technology, tools, and experiences similar to that of the professional workplace they’ll experience after graduation. The proposal process for these education grants is invite only, and all proposals are evaluated based on technical merit, student experience, and alignment with industry needs.

The 44th annual Shad’s R&R for muscular dystrophy raised $175,000 in its latest event, bringing the all-time total to $4.8 million.

The event was held at the Station Creek Golf Club in Gormley, Ont., north of Toronto on June 8.

More than 200 members of the automotive aftermarket took part in a day of golf before heading inside for a dinner banquet where they could also bid in a silent and live auction, and win prizes via a draw.

Jesse Sharratt, director of marketing and communication at Muscular Dystrophy Canada, accepted the ceremonial cheque at the event.

The crowd also heard from Christina Massad, who told her story of being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at age 13, after noticing previously easy tasks like walking up a set of stairs became too much of a challenge. The disease was a mystery to her and her family. They had no idea what it was. “There’s no one in my family that is affected by the condition.”

She thanked everyone in attendance for their support, even though the disease may not be one of the most common or well-known causes, such as cancer.

Christina Massad thanked the crowd for their support of Muscular Dystophy Canada. She was diagnosed with the disease at age 13.

“People just have amazing hearts, and you see that in this room,” she said, recognizing that so many people took time out of their day to help raise money for the cause. “We have no words. People like me, families like mine that have been touched by Muscular Dystrophy Canada, there simply are not enough words in the English dictionary to say thank you for your continued generosity and your support.”

Brad Shaddick, Shad’s chairman, noted the importance of the event, saying it brings everyone together, even if they are competitors in the automotive aftermarket.

“I think that you will agree that Shad’s is a very unique event,” he told the crowd. “It’s a fun day when we set all business issues aside, and competitive issues aside, in order to join forces and focus on the bigger cause of finding a cure for muscular dystrophy.”

Shad’s is the largest single day fundraiser in the automotive aftermarket.

Bosch Aftermarket North America has announced that it will run its Giving Track program for a third straight year. It’s a charitable contribution program for the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season.

The program provides contributions to organizations that are important to the motorsports community, Bosch said in a news release. When a sponsored driver notches a series victory, $1,000 is given to a team-specified charity.

“The NASCAR community extends beyond the garage bays, pit row and even victory lane. It’s a series that takes great pride in support from their fan base, and in returning that support to fans at the same time,” said Tony Pauly, director of advertising and brand management for Robert Bosch LLC, Automotive Aftermarket NA. “Through Giving Track, Bosch upholds our core philanthropic values to lend our hand to the NASCAR community and contribute to team charitable efforts.”

Last year, Giving Track gave out $30,000 in contributions. Jimmie Johnson was the top earner and funds went to Together We Feed, an organization focused on feeding and caring for children living in poverty.

April update

As of April 5, Bosch announced that $4,000 has been donated to charities as part of Giving Track.

Two victories from Brad Keselowski on April 2 at the STP 500 and on March 5 at the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 secured $2,000 for the Checkered Flag Foundation, which honours and assists veterans.

Ryan Newman’s March 19 victory at the Camping World 500 meant $1,000 for The Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma, which discovers and shares the best ways to prevent and treat severe injuries in children.

Joey Logano’s win at the Advance Auto Parts Clash on February 19 earned $1,000 for the Joey Logano Foundation, which invests in organizations offering second chances to children and young adults during times of crisis, and works to inspire others to live a life of generosity.

May update

Another $2,000 was added in May thanks to Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon

Busch’s victory on May 20 at the NASCAR All-Star Race earned $1,000 for the Kyle Busch Foundation, which is committed to empowering children, families and communities to overcome hardship by providing essential tools to allow them to live their best lives possible.

Dillon’s win on May 28 at the Coca-Cola 600 earned $1,000 for the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma, which discovers and shares the best ways to prevent and treat severe injuries in children.

 June update

The $10,000 milestone was passed this month. Jimmie Johnson’s win at the AAA 400 Drive for Autism meant a $1,000 contribution from Bosch to the Hendrick Family Foundation.

July update

Bosch Giving Track contributed $3,000 to charities specified by its sponsored teams, Joe Gibbs Racing and Team Hendrick. Contributions were secured drivers Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Kasey Kahne.

August update

Kyle Busch earned a $1,000 donation to the Kyle Busch Foundation following win at Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Kyle drove through victory lane in his Bosch-equipped No. 18 Toyota Camry, completing his second career sweep at Bristol Motor Speedway.

September update

$2,000 was contributed this month. Denny Hamlin’s victory on September 3 at the Bojangles Southern 500 earned $1,000 for the Denny Hamlin Foundation, which is committed to raising awareness and funds for the specific needs of children with cystic fibrosis. Kyle Busch’s victory on September 24 at the ISM Connect 300 earned $1,000 for the Kyle Busch Foundation, which is committed to empowering children, families and communities to overcome hardship by providing essential tools to allow them to live their best lives possible.

October update

Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski combined to bring in $3,000 of contributions this month. Busch’s victories on October 1 at the Apache Warrior 400 and October 29 at the First Data 500 earned $2,000 for the Kyle Busch Foundation. Keselowski’s victory at the Alabama 500 on October 15 secured $1,000 to the Checkered Flag Foundation, which honors and assists those who have sacrificed greatly for our country.

Auto tech teacher Antoine Labbé started Rebuilding Wheels, Rebuilding Lives in Windsor, Ont. to repair cars with his students at École secondaire E.J. Lajeunesse in Windsor, Ont. so that families in need would have a vehicle to get to and from work. From left, students Owen Seeger and Joseph Reaume service the transmission of a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix in September 2016.

Antoine Labbé always wanted to give back to his community. He just didn’t quite know how.

The automotive tech teacher at École secondaire E.J. Lajeunesse, a French-language high school in Windsor, Ont., knew his skills as a certified automotive service technician could be put to good use by helping families in need to have a car to get to and from work.

“I’ve had (the idea) since I started teaching, but I just haven’t had the support or experience to launch a project like that,” he said.

In 2013, he applied for a grant through a program from home improvement chain Lowe’s, called Toolbox for Education. He had to show he had partners in the community to help with his plan.

That was easy, Labbé found.

He got in touch with the local United Way. He called up Family Services Windsor Essex. It didn’t take much to convince those groups.

“We threw the idea at them and they pretty much said yes on the spot,” Labbé said. The United Way, Labbé said, donates $5,000 a year to purchase parts. And Family Services takes care of the application process to find families in need of a vehicle.

Then he contacted local businesses. They, too, jumped at the chance to help out. Beverly Tire, for example, donated tasks like the safety inspection and e-test for certification. Benson Auto Parts secured parts donations from suppliers. A fellow teacher, Shelley Ryan, who used to work in the marketing department at Chrysler and now heads the business program at the school, helped with filling out the paperwork since Labbé admitted that wasn’t quite his forte. “I couldn’t have done all of this without her.”

Hunter Hill, a student of the auto shop program, raises a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix to replace control arm bushings in September 2016. Other work on the car included replacing the muffler, battery, struts and all brakes.

For Aaron Habib, Benson’s operations manager of southwest Ontario, being part of the project “was a no-brainer.

“To see that much passion to support people in our community was unbelievable,” he said, adding that it was “unreal” to see all the partners come together to back Labbé.

Armed with so much support, Labbé was awarded a grant of $9,000 to start Rebuilding Wheels, Rebuilding Lives. “We needed those community partners to make the project viable and to get the grant, he said.

The project got such a positive reaction because it was to serve a need within the community, he said. “In this area here, we have a challenge with not enough public transit,” he said. And for people who need to get to work, it’s tough if they can’t afford a vehicle. “It’s a serious problem here.”

Recipients need to have a job so they can care for and maintain the vehicle, Labbé said.

And the support grew. Labbé, who has been teaching for seven years, is partnered with Jeff Smith’s County Chevrolet dealership, which supplies three cars a year. Usually, these vehicles are trade-ins and the dealer handpicks what would be right for the project.

“it’s awesome to see the kids being a part of it and knowing that they’re helping the community and helping families,” said Barb Monette, office manager at the Chevrolet dealership. “People can get to work and back and help their families out. It helps them tremendously.”

The dealership also helps with the transfer of ownership, licensing and all the other administrative tasks that go into getting the car ready for the family. The dealer covers these costs and provides a one-year warranty on the powertrain.

“We know it’s helping a family directly and it’s a great feeling,” Monette said.

Students and partners of the Rebuilding Wheels, Rebuilding Lives project gathered for the giveaway of a rebuilt 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix in September 2016.

It’s lesson that his students can learn from. Labbé wants his kids to “help out and be involved in the community. I try to teach my kids that you got to do what you are able to do. Use your talents. Do something productive with your talents.”

And they responded. “The kids are pumped. You should see the students at these events,” Labbé said, adding that they’re “beaming” at events and “proud to be part of the project.”

And it’s not just his auto students helping out. Other departments like the culinary team and business class help put on the events when giving away the car. So far, five have been given away.

“The culinary arts class did a BBQ. The music class did a show for one event,” he said. “The business is in charge of setting up the event and coordinating logistics. It’s a school project.”

Labbé limits what kind of car he and his students will take in.

“I’m not a body mechanic,” he said, so any vehicle requiring such work won’t be accepted. But “something with a decent powertrain, ideally low mileage … ideally a transmission that is in good shape and doesn’t need rebuilding,” is what he looks for.

“We’re doing a lot of tuning up of the engine, timing belts, water pumps, shocks, struts, brakes all the way around, alignment (and) tires,” he listed as common tasks performed.

Labbé is thankful for all of the support he has received so far. Everyone “has been on board 100 per cent,” he said. And, he added, the program shows that anyone can use their talents to help others.

During the past few months, employees at Denso Manufacturing Canada in Guelph, ON participated in quality and safety initiatives to earn four parts of a child’s bicycle. Then, teams assembled the bikes – under the supervision of a qualified mechanic –so they can be donated to the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition.

“The Denso spirit is all about collaboration, challenge and teamwork so it was natural – and fun – to rethink the quality challenge to benefit the community at this time of year,” said Rich vanOorschot, president Denso Manufacturing Canada. “We’re growing in Guelph and so is our community engagement.”

Brendan Johnson, executive director of the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition, received the bikes and will lead the distribution to selected families across the city. He said “Bicycles mean freedom, adventure and fun but not everyone in our community has a bike – especially a new one. This is such a wonderful, welcome and powerful surprise!”

A former bike shop employee himself, Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie was also on hand for the Denso event. These are just the types of partnerships he likes to see. “Hats off to Denso employees for using their skills to build brand-new bikes, then donating them to children just in time for the holiday season,” he said. “This is a terrific example of giving back to our community. Thank you Denso!”
