For Eddie Tso, CEO of Pacer Dynamics Automotive Parts, entering the auto care industry was a natural combination of his professional experience and personal interest in vehicles. Eddie shares his journey from senior management roles in technology and consulting to leading an automotive manufacturing company, and discusses what being part of the Young Professionals in the Auto Care (YPA) Community means to him.

At a glance:

Name: Eddie Tso

Job title and company: CEO, Pacer Dynamics Automotive Parts

Years in the YPA: One year

What inspired you to work in the auto care sector?

My journey into the auto care industry was shaped by both professional ambition and personal passion. After years in senior management roles within technology and business consulting, I felt increasingly drawn to the hands-on craftsmanship I had always enjoyed with vehicles. Growing up, I spent countless hours maintaining and modifying cars and motorcycles, fascinated by how small changes could lead to significant improvements. This passion naturally guided me into the auto care sector, where I could merge my technical expertise with strategic leadership.

What excites me most about this industry is the balance of tradition and forward-thinking — whether it is the evolution of electric vehicles or advancements in supply chains, there are always new challenges to solve and opportunities to drive meaningful change.

You are involved in the Young Professionals in the Auto care sector community — what does it mean to you?

Being part of the Young Professionals in the Auto care sector (YPA) community is about shaping the future of the auto care industry. For me, YPA is about creating lasting, positive change by building connections with the people who truly drive the industry forward. The strength of the auto care sector lies in its people, and that is what makes this community so valuable.

Through our trusted logistics partners at Ziing, we were introduced to AIA Canada, where I have had the privilege of befriending incredible professionals like Noah Smolders from AutologiQ and respected industry advisor Joe Mercanti. The support from these organizations and individuals has been instrumental in our journey, and it is relationships like these that make YPA so impactful.

What advice do you have for someone starting out in the industry?

For someone just starting their career in the auto care industry, stay curious and dive into as many areas of the industry as possible. Build relationships early, ask questions, and speak with mentors who can guide you. Do not be afraid to get hands-on and learn the technical side, but also develop your business acumen—it will help you see the bigger picture.

For those, like myself, coming from another industry, leverage your existing knowledge and skills, but also be open to adapting them to fit this unique space. Auto care has its own nuances, so understanding both the technical details and the market dynamics will be key. Coming from another field gives you a fresh perspective, which can be an advantage if you combine it with industry-specific knowledge.

About the Young Professionals in the Auto care sector

Young Professionals in the Auto care sector (YPA) is an Automotive Industries Association of Canada (AIA Canada) community comprising of young executives, of 45 years or younger, in the Canadian auto care sector. They support the career growth of young professionals by expanding their network and assisting them in becoming a thought leader in Canada’s auto care industry.

Nhu Nguyen has always felt the support of her male colleagues, instructors and mentors during her career as an automotive technician, which is why she goes out of her way to make men’s health a focus every year.

She is a classic Porsche technician and has been a passionate supporter of Movember for more than a decade, raising an impressive $21,000 to support men’s health initiatives.

“I’ve been a Mo-Sister ever since I got into the trade,” she says in this episode of Auto Service World Conversations. “For the last 12 years, I’ve been baking cookies, raising money and awareness for November.”

Last year, Nguyen held her first “Nhuvember” event in Toronto, a car meet mixed with a car exhibit that featured live painting, live vehicle repairs and more. It raised more than $8,000 for the cause.

The event will be held this year at Pfaff Tuning in Woodbridge from 6-9 p.m. on November 16. It is sponsored by Canaweld, which will donate 5 per cent of total purchases from the Canaweld website using the promo code ‘Nhuvember’ through the month of November.

Nguyen’s passion for supporting men’s health is rooted in her experience as a woman in the male-dominated automotive industry. She explained that she has been fortunate to receive tremendous support and encouragement from her mentors, teachers and coworkers, and she wants to support those who may not be speaking up for themselves.

“I’m in this male-dominated industry and I know that a lot of women have a tough time — and have had and continue to have a tough time — in this industry. But my personal experience has been one of great support, warmth, encouragement,” she says. “I understand also what this industry is like for men in this industry, what society is like for men in general. I just feel it’s really important for those not speaking up for themselves to have a voice.”

For those looking to support Nhuvember, either by sponsorship, to buy cookies or otherwise, contact her directly through Instagram at @dear_nhu.

With current CEO Larry Pavey set to retire, The Automotive Parts Services Group announced that Jeff Koviak will take over at the start of next year.

Koviak will lead strategic initiatives for The Group membership, a joint partnership between the Federated Alliance and The Pronto Network that is made up of 300 member companies with more than 5,000 locations and 80,000 employees mostly in North America. His focus will be on maximizing future revenue growth while also streamlining internal systems and resources.

The Young Professionals in the Auto care sector is the gathering place for the industry’s youngest professionals.

But there’s plenty of room for it to grow.

YPA chair Kari Hann sat down with Auto Service World Conversations host and YPA committee member Adam Malik to talk about her journey into the aftermarket, into the YPA — or as it was known when she first joined, the Young Executives Society — and what her goals are as chair.

Hann also dives into what the YPA community means for the aftermarket and its young professionals. She discusses the opportunities that are there and why employers should support their younger staff to join.

But the community needs the support of the industry as well. Aftermarket companies should also rally around the group, Hann urged, to provide not only greater chances to network but also learning opportunities.

Listen in as she dives into the value of the YPA, her goals and what’s possibly ahead for the community.

The 2021 Shop of the Year Winner is being forced out to make way for condos. But she happily reflects on 25 years serving her community

The post Shop owner Josie Candito prepares to close up appeared first on Auto Service World.

]]>

A quarter century as a landmark in Toronto’s west end, Master Mechanic High Park is getting ready to shut its doors this weekend.

It’s a decision owner Josie Candito has been preparing for. She’s known for a few years now that that landowner wanted to convert the plot of land at the corner of Dundas St. West and Howard Park Avenue — near the High Park, Roncesvalles and Parkdale neighbourhoods — into a condo development.

Unable to find a suitable location that would keep her within the community she has spent so much time involved with, she’s decided to hang it up as of June 30. But as she bids farewell, she’s taking happy memories with her.

And that’s partly because so many have mentioned how she’s spread happiness through the area. An avid contributor to the community through her charity work, Candito has become part of local lore with her weekly inspirational messages on the sign in front of her store.

While oil changes price adorned the sign at one time, she transitioned to positive thoughts.

It “started [as] something I used in my own life,” she explained, looking back on how it all began. “I started having some health problems and it helped me. And I just thought, ‘Hey, why not?’”

The neighbourhood responded. It’s such a community staple that local residents want the sign to stay long after Candito leaves. But that’s up to the landowner, she noted.

She further reflected on her entrance to the industry. Candito is not a tradesperson. She is an accountant by background and worked out of Master Mechanic’s head office when the opportunity to be a franchise owner came across her desk. She jumped at the chance.

But there was another hurdle — being a woman in a male-dominated industry.

“When I started in ’99, being a female, even still being a female these days, isn’t easy in a male-dominated industry. They accepted me. The franchisor at the time was amazing,” she said.

“I thought at this point, I’d be sadder. But I’m just taking back all the love right now. It’s just helping me get through the last days of closing the shop because it feels like it meant something to me.”

The key to success? Put a good people around you.

“No matter if you’re a man or a woman, have a team around you that supports you. You can accomplish anything you want,” Candito said. “It comes with a lot of sacrifices, I’m not going to lie. It’s a lot if you want to be a certain way. But it’s been my everything.”

She also credited her dog, Charlie, who had the title of chief dog officer in the shop, as helping her get through the tough times. Sadly, Charlie passed last week. He was front and centre when her shop won the 2021 Shop of the Year Award.

While she admitted to not being a risk-taker, Candito is glad she made the leap 25 years ago and pushed through.

“The first years, five years of business are always difficult,” she said. “And I always persevered and never gave up. And it gave me fuel. And at times, there were things that people would give you negativity [about], and I just ignored it — always ignored it.”

What’s next?

Once the shop closes down, what happens to the staff that celebrated the 2021 Shop of the Year Award from CARS magazine?

A social post from local business organization Railpath District noted that Rui Silvestre, the 2017 CARS Canadian Technician of the Year with Master Mechanic High Park, was opening his own shop once Candito retires and closes the business.

The post noted that the shop’s opening is planned for August and will be located about 2 km north of the current Master Mechanic High Park location.

When asked to comment, Silvestre confirmed the accuracy of the posting but wouldn’t elaborate on details.

Candito posted to social media announcing the shop’s closure, Candito praised Silvestre, saying he took her “vision for the shop farther than I could have imagined — for that I couldn’t be prouder.”

Writer, editor and auto enthusiast, Adam Malik is more than familiar with Canada’s auto care sector. Having been in the industry and its periphery for eight years, Adam Malik has found himself a community within the Young Professionals in the Auto care sector (YPA) and enjoys every opportunity to get together with the community to network, connect and collaborate.

What inspired you to work in the auto care sector?

I actually fell into it, left, and then came back. While working in trade media in the accounting and legal fields, a position opened up to manage AutoServiceWorld.com. A former colleague was working with a different publication within the same parent company. I emailed him to ask what he thought about me applying — if it was a good group and if I would be a good fit.

He messaged back saying that he talked to the publisher, that she wanted me to send her my resume directly and that I would basically be in. It was, fortunately enough, that simple.

A little more than two years later, the same parent company created a new position with its insurance trade magazine that seemed to be a natural fit based on my past work covering accounting and finance. I left, but not entirely—insurance and the aftermarket are closely linked, so I was keeping in touch with some auto care folks, particularly those at AIA Canada. But the change happened over the pandemic and I never got to sink my teeth into the insurance industry. The opportunity came to return to the auto care sector and I have not looked back.

This is a long way of saying that this great industry has a lot of wonderful, helpful, inspiring, smart, friendly people. I like calling it a big, small town. It is a huge industry but tightly knit, and there is so much happening here to keep you on your toes.

You are involved in the YPA—what does it mean to you?

I joined YPA because it is so important to connect and network. There are so many things you learn by networking, you meet new people, you become part of a community. In an industry that is changing so much, being able to lean on each other and share knowledge is going to be absolutely essential. We also need to grow this network of young professionals in Canada. We have so many brilliant minds and we need to bring everyone together.

What advice do you have for someone starting out in the industry?

No matter the industry: Get engaged. Be part of the YPA. Be involved in your industry, join communities and be part of associations and groups. Not only will you be helping the industry by sharing your ideas, but you also never know what opportunities you may find. Rather than just clock in and out of your job, get involved if you really want to see your career flourish. Just do it.

Ann Wilson speaks at the 2023 MEMA Vision Conference in Chicago

One of the leading voices on the political stage for the automotive aftermarket is retiring.

Ann Wilson, industry veteran and member of the Automotive Hall of Fame, is hanging it up at the end of the year, MEMA, The Vehicle Suppliers Association announced.

She will transition to the role of being the executive vice president of MEMA government affairs as Ana Meuwissen joins the group as of March 11 to take over Wilson’s role of senior vice president of MEMA government affairs.

“For more than 20 years, Ann Wilson has been a guiding light, expertly navigating the legislative and regulatory landscapes,” said Bill Long, CEO of MEMA, which represents both original equipment and automotive aftermarket suppliers. “Her deep understanding of the needs of the vehicle supplier community and her exceptional leadership have left an indelible mark on MEMA and the entire supplier industry. We are deeply grateful to Ann for her service.”

Wilson has been a leading voice in Washington, D.C., especially as the right to repair debate has heated up in recent years. She has spoken at countless industry events, such as MEMA’s Vision Conference and AAPEX, on the topic.

Meanwhile, Meuwissen will work closely with Wilson during the transition. Meuwissen’s experience includes serving as director of government relations with MEMA from 1988-2005. Since 2012, she has led government affairs for Bosch in the U.S. She is also a former chair of MEMA’s government affairs committee and is the current chair of the government affairs advisory committee of MEMA’s board of directors.

“Ana Meuwissen’s return to MEMA is a significant gain for our organization,” Long said. “Her profound understanding of industry policies, her proactive approach, and her proven leadership skills make her the ideal successor to carry forward Ann’s legacy.”

Art Turney’s Garage has been a key part of its community — and by no accident. It’s now the 2023 Shop of the Year winner

The post Shop of the Year: Building Trust appeared first on Auto Service World.

]]>

The Art Turney’s Garage team with representatives from Milwaukee Tool and the prize pack won by the shop as part of its award.

Art Turney’s Garage doesn’t spend a penny on advertising. If you were to Google it, you won’t find a website. But you will see a Google business profile.

And on the profile, you’ll see a score of 4.9 out of five stars.

“Google Reviews is everything,” said Mike Howard, manager of garage operations at Art Turney’s Garage.

Oftentimes, when a new customer is asked how they found the shop, the answer is almost always because of the reviews on Google.

It’s that word of mouth — digital and in the real world — that has given Art Turney’s Garage a loyal following in Peterborough, Ontario. And it’s the 2023 Shop of the Year, sponsored by Milwaukee.

The shop prides itself on customer relationships and providing an outstanding customer experience.

For example, when a customer doesn’t understand the repair needed or has questions about it, Howard will bring his technicians to the counter to explain exactly what’s happening.

“The mechanics are really good. I’ll just say, ‘Well, let’s talk to your mechanic.’ So the mechanic will come out and they’ll walk them through the process,” he explained.

Or if it’s something that can be explained through a quick video, he’ll open YouTube and show them a video of what’s taking place.

“So that’s my go-to — the mechanics first and then if it’s something simple, I’ll show them a video,” Howard said.

“The mechanics are really good. I’ll just say, ‘Well, let’s talk to your mechanic.’ So the mechanic will come out and they’ll walk them through the process.”

History

The business started around 1930 as Turney Brothers Garage in Colbourne, Ont. Bill Turney moved the business to Peterborough before handing the business over to his son, Art.

He died in 1982 but passed the business on to his son John who sold the business in 1989 to Jim McWilliams, owner of local moving company McWilliams Moving & Storage — who happened to be the first customer when the shop opened a new location. The shops started out repairing the McWilliams fleet and expanded from there. Then they started doing other company’s fleet vehicles.

Over time, customers getting their fleets repaired at Turney’s wanted their personal vehicles to get the same top-notch service, growing the business further. The Turney family continues to have their vehicles serviced at the shop to this day.

Because the shop is a division of a larger company, it’s Howard who oversees the operation rather than the owner. His background is in warehouse and distribution and managing fleets. He joined Art Turney’s Garage about six years ago.

But he’s not a technician. He doesn’t have formal training under the hood. He’s a business person. He brought in two foremen to lead the technical aspects.

“Fortunately, I have a strong crew that has helped me navigate the waters,” Howard said. “So they’re really good, honest and forthright and helped me out with that. They bring their auto and truck mechanical skills to the table and I manage the business and we make it work.”

Howard felt it was important to get some technical know-how in the bays. He reciprocates by giving them insights on the business side of things. “You have to have the business side to run a shop,” he said.

Business philosophy

One of the marks of the Shop of the Year is implementing new systems or looking at new ways to tackle age-old challenges.

Art Turney’s Garage understands the challenges of attracting talent not to just its shop but to the industry as well.

That’s why they put an emphasis on training and work-life balance.

The shop offers a lot of freedom to its staff as to how they want to work. While they have to be in the shop during core hours, they can be flexible with their time and days — and so long as they’re putting in the hours.

“We’re flexible to that. So if they want to start at six in the morning or seven in the morning or eight in the morning and work their eight hours, we’re good with that. We just want them here in the core hours,” Howard said. “It’s a challenge finding, retaining staff and a lot of people have a lot of different needs. They have kids, they have families, various life challenges that they have to adapt to. And the guys have responded well to that.”

Hear more: Click here to listen to the Enhanced Media segment featuring Mike Howard

They have one person who has always been on a four-day schedule — another who just retired worked three days. So flexibility has always been a keyword around the shop. And when one employee asked about doing a four-day workweek, it became an official way of doing business.

Howard picks who works what days based on seniority. So the tenured staff can choose if they want the Monday or Friday off. Then it opens up to the res. If someone wants Wednesday off, they can have it.

Even though the shop advertises its hours as 8-5, people are working away in the bays before and after those times. Usually, there’s someone here most days at 6 a.m., and always by 7 a.m. Then there are some who are still plugging away after the shop is closed.

“Our uniqueness is: If we can help the guys out in any way, we try to do that,” Howard said.

The shop also has a breakfast meeting every Thursday morning that is well received.

“It’s not huge, but the guys seem to appreciate it,” Howard said. “We sit down and have a breakfast and sometimes we have good business conversations and other times we just talk about shop stuff.”

Tools and training

If a technician needs a new tool or something needs to be updated, Howard is receptive.

“I lean heavily on the staff to tell me what their needs are. If it’s imperative to the smooth running of the shop, and it’s necessary for the diagnostics or to do the repairs, then it has to be done regardless,” Howard said. “You have to stay on top [of that]. You got to have tools to fix cars.”

He has his team get the training they need — but he finds that being an independent shop presents challenges in terms of opportunities. Plus, being almost two hours outside of Toronto, he feels that being in a smaller centre doesn’t allow for the same training options.

And with electric vehicles on the horizon, he’s eager to make sure his team can handle upcoming requests.

“Moving forward into the EV world, [training] seems to be non-existent, at least that I’ve found so far,” Howard said. “And I’m concerned — I know it’s probably 10 years out or whatever — but I’m concerned that the younger guys in the trade are going to possibly have a challenge to adapt.”

“It’s a professional trade. And these guys are highly qualified and they’re getting recognized for that. And I think that’s exciting that they’re finally getting the recognition they deserve.”

Looking ahead

Speaking of the future, Howard is aware of trends and demands from the younger generation of customers like texting or online booking. While he hasn’t had many or any requests for such services, he knows he soon will.

“That’s something that the future is going to bring in. The younger people are going to expect and want that. Our clientele right now isn’t,” he observed.

The shop has digital scheduling so the foundation is in place, Howard pointed out. “All the tools are there to facilitate it. We have the capabilities to do it, but we just haven’t promoted it. So I think we just need to open it up to the customer.”

On the topic of customers, Howard believes the same beliefs and expectations are still in place: They want the job done well.

“They want a worry-free job,” he said. “They don’t want to have to ask questions afterwards. And they want it done in a timely manner at a fair price. They don’t necessarily want a cheap price. They want a fair price. They want value for the money. And that’s I think that’s been the expectation forever.”

The key is value for money. Customers understand that things have gotten more expensive. They’re generally fine with that.

But added to the aftermarket’s challenge is the lack of available talent, partly due to low wages.

“And in order to attract and retain staff, we’ve had to increase wages, which is due. I generally think the whole business, the whole trade is underpaid. And we’ve increased wages, trying to remain competitive with our competition. And, in turn, therefore, we had raised door rates and the price parts have gone up, and everything’s gone up. And it’s all part of keeping the lights on and trying to make a profit,” Howard said.

“It’s still a bit of a sticker shock, but I totally get it. Once you educate the customers, they’re on board. I don’t think we’ve ever, to the best of my knowledge, we’ve never lost a customer and then due to our prices — and we have raised them considerably post-COVID.”

Top challenges

It’s that lack of talent that keeps Howard up at night. Well, one of the things.

Margins are another. For the work that goes into fixing a vehicle, he doesn’t believe the profit matches that effort.

“You look back on it and go, ‘Wow, that was a lot of work to get there,” Howard said.

And the future of the industry is another worry, particularly around electrification. While he admitted being on the older end of the spectrum means he may never have to deal with the technology, he wonders what’s in store for the younger crew.

“The 20-year-olds might adapt; they’ll come up with it. It’s going to be the 40-year-old guys that are going … to have the problem,” he predicted.

Top opportunities

The fact that the role of the technician is gaining more respect and the auto repair business is developing a better understanding with customers are two things that Howard is excited about.

“I think that people more and more are recognizing that garages are here to make money and they’re no different than any other business,” Howard said.

He pointed to more people recognizing that this industry can be more like a dentist’s office where they charge you for all of their time. It tied back into his concerns of profit margin — capturing all of the time a shop spends working on a vehicle and recognizing the education and training a technician has done to be able to return the vehicle to proper working order is critical.

“It’s a professional trade. And these guys are highly qualified and they’re getting recognized for that,” Howard said. “And I think that’s exciting that they’re finally getting the recognition they deserve.”

Advice

The winner of the Shop of the Year is always asked for their advice to their peers. For Howard, it was simple: Listen to your people. They’re out in the field. It’s their boots on the ground. They hear more than the people in charge.

“And, also, they know their trade,” Howard said. “They know what they need to do the job. So they’re the eyes and ears and knowledge.”

Eli N. Futerman, the company’s board chairman and co-owner of Hahn Automotive Warehouse, welcomed Washbish to the role.

“JC brings youth, enthusiasm and vision to our shareholders as our new leader,” he said.

Corey Bartlett, treasurer of the Alliance’s board of directors and CEO of Automotive Parts Headquarters, highlighted the board’s excitement to promote Washbish and how it fits with the company’s strategy.

“The Alliance board of directors has always been very strategic about the long-term future of the Alliance and the continued success of its shareholders,” he said in the announcement. “This strategic focus on the future of the Alliance led us to JC eight years ago.”

Before joining the Alliance, Washbish was an account executive with Niterra North America (formerly NGK Spark Plugs) where he was responsible for major retail accounts.

Washbish holds a Juris Doctor from Ava Maria School of Law in Naples, Florida, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio. He has also received his AAP designation from the University of the Aftermarket and is a graduate of its Leadership 2.0 program.

“The Alliance while continue to be a driving force in the independent aftermarket,” said Washbish. “Our members are progressive, forward-thinking and eager to expand the Alliance’s influence throughout North America. He will report directly to CEO John R. Washbish and the Alliance board of directors.

Fountain Tire executive chair Brent Hesje was recently inducted to the Northern Alberta Business Hall of Fame.

Hesje, who served as chair of AIA Canada in 2018, was inducted by Junior Achievement (JA) Northern Alberta & NWT. He was recognized for his lifetime achievements in business and community leadership, including the significant impact made over his 30-year career at Fountain Tire.

“One of the most rewarding parts of my career has been supporting individuals and companies in their own journeys to success,” Hesje said. “Whether at Fountain Tire or across the broader tire industry, in the local business community and with charitable organizations, I’ve found a philosophy of partnership goes a very long way.”

Fountain Tire’s partnership model has long been attributed to the company’s success. Store managers have 50 per cent ownership of their stores. Local owners are heavily involved in their communities and the company runs mentorship-based programs designed to develop associates into managers and owners.

“Brent is a leader in every sense of the word,” said current Fountain Tire CEO Jason Herle. “His legacy is woven throughout our organization and our industry. We’re honoured to have Brent’s continued involvement with Fountain Tire as he carries on his business advisory and community work.”

Read this month’s spotlight on Pragati Upadhyay

The post YPA Spotlight: Finding her place in the automotive aftermarket industry appeared first on Auto Service World.

]]>

Passionate about customers and creating strong relationships, Pragati Upadhyay found her way into the automotive aftermarket industry right after completing her MBA. By learning new industries, adapting to life in Canada, and an extensive education, Upadhyay feels at ease in the auto care industry. Eager to connect with peers and create a more diverse industry, she is just getting started.

How long have you worked in the automotive industry?

My career in the automotive aftermarket started 13 years ago when I joined Castrol India Ltd. in 2010 and worked there until I moved to Canada. My first opportunity in Canada was with Total Energies, where I worked with automotive aftermarket distributors and customers for five years.

What company do you currently work for? What is your position?

I joined Wakefield Canada in 2021, managing distributor partners, OEM, Jobbers and ASP. In 2022, I took on the role of national accounts manager, where I take care of our key retail partner, the Canadian Tire Corporation. I manage Canadian Tire retail, auto services, and Partsource for Castrol and the SuperClean brand.

Did you know you wanted to work in the auto care sector?

To be honest, no. I like to think the auto care sector chose me. After completing my MBA in India, I worked for a construction company, but at the time, it was not the right fit for me. I was actively looking for a change when a recruiter reached out to me about a position with Castrol at British Petroleum (BP).

Soon after I started working with Castrol, I fell in love with the company as a brand, the culture of BP, and the auto care industry in general. While there were some challenges—the industry in India is very fragmented and being a woman in a male-dominated industry is not easy—but working in the industry felt natural.

I met many incredible people within the organization and outside the organization who treated me with respect. I feel comfortable and at ease working in the auto care industry.

What does your participation in the Young Professionals in the Aftermarket mean to you?

Being involved in the YPA is an excellent opportunity to learn, network, and feel connected with the industry.

What is one of the biggest and/or most difficult lessons you have had to learn as a young professional?

Early on in my career, I realized that if you are good at what you do, opportunities will come your way and help you choose your career path. I started my career in construction, which was a great learning opportunity, but it was not my passion. I realized my passion when I joined Castrol. I never would have imagined myself being a sales professional, but Castrol has allowed me to figure that out and it has been a great journey since.

Spotlight on Andrew Ionescu

The post YPA Spotlight: Aftermarket career growth driven by different perspectives: appeared first on Auto Service World.

]]>

As a young professional, Andrew Ionescu’s career has quickly grown and has resulted in many great accomplishments. He credits his success to his different perspectives resembling those of the end users rather than of the industry veterans. Andrew feels passionate about giving a voice to young professionals in the automotive industry and sharing his experiences and strategies to revitalize the auto care sector.

What company do you currently work for? What is your position?

I am currently working as Hunter Engineering’s Global Business Development Manager, overseeing both North American and international growth projects. My main focus is to develop new ideas and tools to help both Hunter and our partners succeed in every area of their business.

I started as a sales and marketing coordinator for Hunter Canada in June 2021, and after many examples of going above and beyond as well as a show of passion for the company and industry, I was promoted to my current position in April of 2022.

What does your participation in the Young Professionals in the Aftermarket community mean to you? What would you like to see us as a committee achieve in years to come?

The Young Professionals in the Aftermarket (YPA) community is the future of the industry. By giving a platform and voice to young professionals, the YPA community and AIA Canada are ensuring that we can think about and plan for problems/opportunities that will present themselves long after most of the current industry spokespeople have retired.

I really like witnessing the current push towards educating people on the exciting prospects that the automotive aftermarket can bring and why careers in this space should be at the top of people’s radar.

What is one of your proudest moments in your career so far?

My proudest moment was attending and presenting at Automechanika 2022 in Germany and broadening my understanding of the industry from only looking at what is going on in my own backyard to how the entire world is looking at the developments in the industry.

What advice would you give someone either starting in the industry or looking to transition into the industry?

My biggest weakness coming into the industry was also one of my biggest strengths. I think my lack of knowledge of automotive services and parts is not so different from most of the automotive industry’s end users, and so I was able to bring a perspective to my work and to my colleagues that they might not have thought about otherwise. I had to spend a lot of time and effort to catch up and be able to have a confident conversation about undercar services, but this industry is way too vast and there are so many niches, that there will always be someone that knows more about something. My advice to someone new would be to try and use that to your advantage by questioning everything and giving people a perspective that makes sense, but that they may not have thought about.

It’s official: The head of AIA Canada’s board of directors executive committee will be known as ‘chair’ with Shannon Spano taking the helm.

The title change will remain in place — new buttons identifying the position denote ‘chair’ instead of ‘chairman’ as in years past have been made.

With Spano, vice president of Sales at Wakefield Canada, sliding into the role of chair, Jason Yurchak, senior vice president at Worldpac Canada, was elected to the role of immediate past chair during AIA Canada’s Annual General Meeting on May 3.

Joining them on the board are Ryan Bruno, president of CSN Collision Centres, as first vice chair and Tony Kuczynski, president and CEO of Mister Transmission as second vice chair.

Four new members of the board were elected to the board. Jasna Smiljcic, senior director and country leader at Gates, Jason G. Herle, CEO of Fountain Tire, Michael O’Callaghan, COO and vice president of operations at Craftsman Collision and Micheline Davies, senior vice president of automotive at Canadian Tire are the newly-elected members and will serve on the board until the 2026 AGM.

According to the announcement from AIA Canada, Smiljcic has more than 20 years of experience in the auto care industry. She joined Gates in 2019 as the Canadian industrial replacement sales director. Since then, she was promoted to Canadian country sales director and her current role of senior director and country leader.

Herle has been with Fountain Tire since 1994 and held a number of positions in Western Canada before being promoted to chief executive officer in 2022. He is currently a board member of Fountain Tire Ltd. and GlassMasters Autoglass and is the past Chair of the Finance Committee for the Western Canadian Tire Dealers Association. He has also been a contributor to the CARS 2023 Executive Outlook. You can read his most recent industry observations here.

At Craftsman, O’Callaghan oversees operations and human resources, with a focus on financial and operational sustainability. He has 35 years of automotive industry experience, both on the shop floor and in the head office. He’s an auto care sector promoter and regularly sits on committees representing the industry.

Davies leads Canadian Tire’s automotive portfolio, which includes Canadian Tire businesses, as well as the Petroleum and PartSource banners. She spearheaded the company’s Women’s Leadership Network, and was a winner of WXN’s Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in 2020.

AIA Canada thanked former directors Bob Jaworski and Graham Jeffery for their commitment and service to the board.

Brent Hesje, executive chair of Fountain Tire, will be inducted into the Northern Alberta Business Hall of Fame.

The honour recognizes his lifetime achievements in business and community leadership. He was named a 2023 inductee by Junior Achievement (JA) Northern Alberta & NWT.

The ceremony will take place in the fall. The group honours distinguished business leaders in the region for their lifetime achievements and service to communities, the local economy and to the collective future of Albertans. Inductees are selected for their entrepreneurial vision, proven leadership, integrity and legacy of philanthropy or community-based initiatives.

“It is an honour to be named alongside this esteemed group of leaders who have created incredible legacies in our community,” Hesje in an announcement. “Throughout my career, one thing has consistently rung true: The key to one’s own success is helping others find theirs.”

Hesje served as CEO of Fountain Tire for 17 years, during which time the company saw significant growth. He noted strategic partnerships as a major factor in the company’s success, such as Goodyear Canada obtaining a minority ownership position in the company and that most store managers have 50 per cent ownership of their stores.

The announcement also highlighted that Hesje championed Fountain Tire’s mentorship-based programs that develop associates into managers and owners and the company’s commitment to giving back to the communities in which it operates.

He also sits on the boards of The Fraser Institute, Alberta Blue Cross, the Edmonton Elks, Great Western Brewing Company and The Canadian Brewhouse. He previously served as chair of the Automotive Industry Association of Canada, Western Canada Tire Dealers and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT).

He was awarded the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce Northern Lights Award of Distinction (2018), inducted into the Tire Industry Association (TIA) Hall of Fame (2019), named a Distinguished Friend of NAIT (2021) and awarded the MacGregor Cup by The Roy Group (2022).

A long-time figure of the automotive aftermarket has passed. John Grant, the co-founder of Grant Brothers Sales, died this past weekend.

His obituary said he passed peacefully at home at the age of 104. He was born in North Sidney in 1918 and raised throughout Nova Scotia.

He entered the Second World War and the Royal Canadian Navy 24 years old. It was a chance meeting with his brother, Frank, who was then a decorated pilot. They first discussed plans to start a business together.

After the war, Grant Brothers Sales Limited was launched. They represented manufacturers of auto parts across Canada. He worked there until 83 years old before passing the company on to family.

In a LinkedIn post, his grandson Charlie Grant, now president and CEO of the company said, “We are, and always will, continue to carry the torch forward, Grandpa. We will continue to act with class and respect our people, our industry and our customers, just as you did 77 years ago when you started this business.”

A funeral mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church in Toronto on April 19. In lieu of flowers, donations to Blessed Sacrament Church are appreciated by the family.

Shannon Spano, incoming chair of AIA Canada, wants to be a leader for young industry pros, while making the aftermarket more welcoming

The post From the Magazine: Incoming AIA Canada Chair: ‘Lift while you climb’ appeared first on Auto Service World.

AIA Canada incoming chair Shannon Spano

You’ll notice a slight change in the description of the lead position with the Automotive Industries Association of Canada’s executive committee.

The position was always held by a man. The term ‘chairman’ has always been applied and never changed despite other companies and industries adjusting the term to be more inclusive. That was modified in 2020 when Susan Hitchon took the helm as the first female in the position and preferred to be called “madam chairman.” While that acknowledged the fact that there was a woman at the lead, once the term was served, it reverted back to “chairman” as Bob Jaworski and Jason Yurchak served in the role following Hitchon.

But the conversation is changing. Language is changing. Referring to the role as ‘chair’ is important to Shannon Spano, who will move into the role this spring following AIA Canada’s Annual General Meeting.

As the second woman ever to lead the group’s executive committee, it was important to her to discuss changing the language to be gender neutral. Using antiquated terminology only hurts the perception of the industry, especially as it faces talent challenges.

“Younger people are very socially conscious. They believe in sense of community. I feel like I’m in a unique position to be a bridge,” Spano told Jobber News. “The world is rapidly changing. And I know in order for us to continue to evolve, we need to think about succession planning; we need to bring more people in with diverse backgrounds and younger people at the table faster.”

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) have been corporate focus points for many years now. But the automotive industry as a whole, including the aftermarket, is a male-dominated industry. Last year, as Spano served as first vice chair, she was one of just two women to serve on the board of directors, with the other being Pamela Lee of Mr. Lube, who served as a director.

“I feel very grateful that I’ve given this opportunity,” Spano said of being AIA Canada’s chair. “I believe very strongly in the diversity, equity inclusion agenda that society is driving. And I think that there’s an impact I can have in this role and to liken that to the industry and the voice of AIA Canada.”

She humbly acknowledged that she is a privileged white woman. So while she can’t identify with all the issues around DEI, there are parts with which she can relate.

“To me, it’s about just having impactful conversations, bold, brave leadership, challenging status quo, especially since it’s such a tumultuous journey we’re on as an industry,” she said. “And I think that there’s power and community in that too. So, the DEI agenda to me is really core to my personal values. And I think it’ll live and breathe in the conversations I have in this role.”

“I believe very strongly in the diversity, equity inclusion agenda that society is driving. And I think that there’s an impact I can have in this role and to liken that to the industry and the voice of AIA Canada.”

Path

She’s lived — and is living — the experience of being a female in a male-dominated industry. Working in sales, the imbalance is amplified. By day, Spano is vice president of sales at Wakefield Canada, which distributes the Castrol brand in Canada. She joined the aftermarket from the telecommunications industry.

“Being a female in sales in a male-dominated industry, it was hard for me — especially early on in my career when I was truly trying to understand who I was and what I was going to bring and how was I going to be successful. I was looking for mirror images of that, and I couldn’t really find it,” she said.

That led her to get more involved with the industry, first by joining what is now the Young Professionals in the Aftermarket (YPA) and AIA Canada’s Ontario Division. She got to see how extensive the industry is and find peers who were in a similar boat of trying to find mentors.

“I just really found my voice. The best thing I’ve learned in my career journey up to this point is: You can try to be somebody else but once you centre in on your authentic voice and really find your rhythm in that, then your career starts to sail. Your voice becomes more confident. you become much more open to feedback and perspective,” Spano said. “So I just really took it as a learning journey.”

She saw her career path and journey with AIA Canada move at a similar pace. She was taking on more leadership roles.

“I was building a new mindset, new tools, leaning on different skills. At the same time, I was broadening my perspective, my exposure and my network through AIA Canada through different participatory volunteerism,” Spano said.

“I did a lot of broadening — understanding how the market works, understanding the power of relationships, power customers and influence, what people value as members, how people were in their own careers,” she added. “So, working with younger people that were also trying to progress in their careers. There’s a lot of relatability. I got to learn things that I would never have learned just in my role. So the exposure was excellent for me.”

“I really believe in ‘lift while you climb.’ I feel like it has fostered my career. And I hope to do that for others; be bold and bullish. I really value not just women that lead but women that inspire and have a voice. And so I think that’s my duty.”

Leader, mentor

Last fall, she spoke to students from the Aftermarket Business School at Georgian College during Student Aftermarket Day in Barrie, Ontario. She saw that as an opportunity to connect with the next generation and put herself out there as a mentor.

“Mentorship is reciprocal, so you can always get two-way value,” Spano said. But most important to her is to draw more women to the industry and help them and those who are here find their comfort zone and find success.

In 2018, Spano was recognized as the Young Leader of the Year by the YPA.

“I really believe in ‘lift while you climb.’ I feel like it has fostered my career. And I hope to do that for others; be bold and bullish,” she said. “I really value not just women that lead but women that inspire and have a voice. And so I think that’s my duty.”

Challenges she sees for women include trying to avoid the pressure of having to fit in. She attempted that herself but found that trying to match what the industry has been used to for the last 100 years doesn’t work.

“I spent an enormous amount of energy trying to emulate and trying to mirror and trying to fit in and trying to be liked. And I think what I learned in my journey was: You’ll never fully fit in,” Spano said.

The attraction of diversity is the unique perspectives you get, she observed. Having a welcoming space gets you that because people shine as their authentic selves. You don’t need to stand out just because of who you are and feel like it’s an obligation it to do.

“It’s just centering back on confidence and conviction on what you stand for,” Spano said.

“And it’s about bolder conversations, preparedness and attracting and retaining great talent, especially for someone like myself who didn’t necessarily raise their hand as a little girl and say, ‘I want to be in this industry.’”

Industry challenges, goals

Spano hopes to use those convictions to advance the industry during her one year as chair. She wants the aftermarket to take a step forward on economic viability and stability. She wants advancement on other key AIA Canada initiatives like right to repair.

“We’re going to have to keep adapting and moving forward. I like the cycle of learn, adapt and move forward as you’re managing through change,” she said. “And it’s about bolder conversations, preparedness and attracting and retaining great talent, especially for someone like myself who didn’t necessarily raise their hand as a little girl and say, ‘I want to be in this industry.’”

Challenge inspires and excites. “I see this as something that every industry is going through — different sets of change and challenge. The industries that will be the most prosperous are the ones that connect and have community around it.”

To build that community, there needs to be more data and research. That’s something AIA Canada has expanded recently. Greater advocacy is a focus, along with increased training.

“Organizations are going through difficult times where strategic planning and future-proofing companies don’t mean using the same strategy that they might have used three or four years ago,” Spano observed. “Uncertain times call for unique insights that they might not be able to grasp themselves. And so I think AIA Canada can be a powerful, powerful tool, through the research and advocacy lens.”

Focus

Spano wants to ensure that members can focus on quality rather than quantity. Not all problems can be resolved within a year — and maybe none can — but staying focused and moving the ball forward is a priority.

“So, do fewer things and have bolder and deeper conversations. Be very focused on your messages so they can resonate. And find the intersection between personal and professional,” she stated as the advice she’s giving herself coming into the role.

Finding fulfilment and delivering value are other areas Spano wants to focus on. She’s been involved with a number of community organizations, such as being on boards for women’s shelters and working with distress centres.

“I’ve just always tried to find an outlet to create a deeper sense of purpose. And I think connecting one-on-one with people is so powerful in their own journey,” Spano said. “So I just hope that I can reach and meet wonderful people in the industry. I hope I can connect with them. I hope I can learn their stories. I hope they can inspire action and mobilize some change for the future that I think we all need.”

The Automotive Industries Association of Canada announced the appointment of Stuart “Stu” Klein to the newly created position of senior director of collision.

He will join the senior leadership team and help AIA Canada’s efforts involving the collision sector of the industry.

The appointment was officially announced at the Canadian Collision Industry Forum’s (CCIF) Toronto meeting on February 3

Klein has more than 45 years of collision industry experience, from the shop floor to the corporate office. He is a Red Seal technician. Most recently, he was a technical trainer, running Fix Network’s training facility in Milton, Ontario, when it opened in 2019.

“While my decision to leave the Fix Network training centre is bittersweet, overseeing AIA Canada’s collision programs opens the opportunity to have a positive effect on the industry at large,” he said in the announcement.

The position was created to continue efforts by AIA Canada to strengthen Canada’s collision industry.

“The creation of a new position builds on recent moves by AIA Canada to drive success for the collision sector — including enhanced support for the Canadian Collision Industry Forum and the creation of a Collision Repairers Council,” said Andrew Shepherd, AIA Canada’s senior director, industry programs and executive director, I-CAR Canada. “Stuart will be part of AIA Canada’s senior management team and will be engaging in all facets of the collision repair industry including manufacturer relations, I-CAR training and government advocacy.”

Peter Szarafinski, long-time head of international media relations at Liqui Moly died unexpectedly just ahead of Christmas.

Colleagues were stunned to learn of the news of the 47-year-old’s death before Christmas Eve.

“Unfathomable – the great loss of a valued and extremely popular colleague,” said managing director Günter Hiermaier.

Szarafinski started with the Germany-based additives manufacturer in 2010 when the position was created. While working at Liqui Moly, the trained journalist completed his doctorate with the historiographical book “Rüstung und politisches System” (Armaments and the political system).

“During the past 13 years, Dr. Peter Szarafinski had greatly developed and advanced the public relations work in our foreign markets,” Hiermaier said. “With his knowledge, dedication and high work ethic, he has played a decisive role in the positive impact of our company. His sudden death is also such a huge loss because he was such a likable and popular colleague.”

Szarafinski was also an avid sailor and paraglider. In 2016, he flew from the Allgäu to the North Cape and back with a partner from the Füssen flying club.

“Our thoughts go out to his family and his partner,” Hiermaier said.

Congratulations to Gustafson’s Auto Clinic as the 2022 Shop of the Year!

The annual award handed out by CARS went to this shop in Athabasca, Alberta, about 90 minutes north of Edmonton.

Run by Stacey and Kevin Gustafson, the second-generation owners have dedicated themselves to running a professional automotive shop. The business ups the standards of what a shop should be and look like.

Technicians are clean and polished. As avid students of Bob Greenwood, the Gustafsons have focused on ensuring technicians are treated like the professionals they are.

And the physical business itself is treated the same. You wouldn’t even think you were in a place that services vehicles when you walk through the doors.

Kevin and Stacey are making the industry proud, setting a bar for their peers.

They also received a prize pack from our award sponsor Milwaukee Tool valued at $3,500.From

Catch the profile of Gustafson’s in the upcoming November/December issue of CARSs – and you’ll also be able to find it right here on Auto Service World soon. Stay tuned for more!

German additives company Liqui Moly announced it will add a second managing director at the top of its company.

Uli Weller will move into the role at the start of 2023 and work alongside Günter Hiermaier, who has been sole managing director since March 2022.

In an announcement, the company said the addition of Weller “is a logical step” which will ensure its security and long-term stability.

“My responsibility is to lead our company into a secure future. For me, a second managing director means perfect strategic support,” Hiermaier said in a statement.

Weller has been the company’s commercial director for many years and will continue in that role. Hiermaier credited Weller with shaping Liqui Moly.

“For more than a decade, he has made a reliable contribution to our success,” he added. “He has internalized our values, helped shape our strategies as commercial director and knows the company like nobody else.”

The company’s announcement noted its strong performance in the face of pandemic-related challenges. Adding a second leader can only enhance that growth.

“I consider a strong dual leadership at the helm of the company as a guarantee for continuity, stability as well as security for the company and everyone that works with us,” Hiermaier said. “And also, as a sign of how much we value the company in Würth, which we’ve been a part of since 2018, as a producer of automotive chemicals.”

Fortin’s Supply is carrying on the family legacy as the 2022 Jobber of the Year

The post Jobber of the Year: Like father, like son appeared first on Auto Service World.

]]>

Sean Fortin, left, and Jeff Fortin of Fortin’s Auto Supply in Chilliwack, B.C.

Call it a family tradition.

This year’s Jobber of the Year winner may sound familiar. In 1986, Laurence Fortin of Fortin’s Supply won the recognition from Jobber News. The award was in its infancy, having been first handed out in 1983.

The award meant a lot to the Fortin family. It acknowledged the hard work put into a business that started in 1946 in Chilliwack, British Columbia.

Fast forward more than 35 years later, the family has been honoured again — except it’s Laurence’s son and grandson taking home the honour of the 2022 Jobber of the Year for Fortin’s Supply.

It’s the first time one store has been recognized twice with the honour. For Jeff, to follow in his father’s footsteps was something to be proud of.

“One of the things that kind of pulls at my heart a little bit — my father won it in 1986,” he said. “It’s a real honour, and nice to be recognized by your peers.”

But Jeff and Sean have received the recognition in their own right. Chosen by a panel of industry professionals, Jeff and Sean stood out in a number of ways, including their dedication to customers, growth and expansion, longevity and industry and community involvement.

And it’s the latter that are most important to both Jeff and Sean.

Jeff has served on the board of Modern Sales — Fortin’s is celebrating 40 years as a member in 2022 — twice, including a term as president. Sean worked at Modern Sales before joining the family business and now sits on the board himself.

Jeff didn’t know much about the board when he first joined. He was in his 30s and was asked by people almost twice his age to work alongside them. He called that “an honour.”

Sean felt the same way when he was approached about serving on the board. “I was like, “You guys want me?” Because I look up to these people. People on the board have been mentors of mine — I used to reach out to them.”

To both Jeff and Sean, the industry has served them well. It was only natural to try and give back as much as they could.

It’s the same reason they are dedicated to their local community. Jeff makes it a priority to work with the local hospital. Sean spends time with the Chilliwack Bowls of Hope Society, which, among other things, feeds children in many schools across the community.

“It means a lot to me personally because I grew up going to those schools — my dad went to those schools, too,” Sean said. “It’s our community.”

Jeff Fortin, left, and Sean Fortin stand by the plaque awarded to Laurence Fortin in 1986 for the Jobber of the Year Award.

The business

Fortin’s Supply has been around for more than 75 years. And it will go on for many more as it transitions to its fourth-generation family owner in Sean.

“It’s gratifying to see a fourth-generation family business continue to thrive and be passed down successfully through the generations,” said Modern Sales Co-op president Reid Ferguson.

The company has grown to four locations. It has two stores in Chilliwack and another in Abbotsford. In September, it acquired a new location in Hope, about a half hour northeast of Chilliwack, expanding the vast geographical coverage of Fortin’s.

“It fits very well into our business plans,” Jeff said of the acquisition.

Sean agreed. The new location is unique but also similar to their own in the way the business operates.

“Hope is unique, but also has very good people, similar industries, it’s the next city over — so it makes sense,” he said. “The staff there and the owner, we have a similar culture and similar mindset. I enjoy going there and working with them. It’s very positive.”

Culture is a major sticking point in the Fortin’s family. They not only want to be a good place to work but a place where staff feel empowered. They like to embrace a culture of change and have their staff provide ideas on how to make things better. They’re happy to talk about new initiatives.

“I think that’s rewarding for staff to have, that open culture of [believing] they can change things; they can make a difference in their everyday,” Sean said.

Its two Chilliwack locations are also Home Hardware stores – so apart from auto parts, customers can buy everything from kitchen faucets to paint. Sean credited Ferguson’s way of thinking for it being a success: A customer has a personal life along with the professional side. While they’re coming to Fortin’s for auto parts for their business, they may need a new barbecue at home.

“Why wouldn’t you want to talk to them about those things?” Sean remembered Ferguson saying.

Watching from the outside, Ferguson sees the attention to detail the Fortin family has.

“They know all their customers; their staff has been with them a long time. They’re very hands-on as it relates to their business,” he said.

“Not everybody spends as much time immersed in their business as the Fortin family does. So that stands out to me. They’ve been there a long time. They’re involved in a number of different things. They network very well; always have time to talk to people, to learn and understand what’s going on in the world around them.”

Coaching

Perhaps you’ve noticed a theme about Sean and Jeff: They’re open to new ideas. They like feedback.

And so it’s perhaps no coincidence that they put a big emphasis on coaching. They don’t act like they know everything. They know they need not just an outside perspective, but someone to keep them sharp.

“It keeps you focused on what’s important. And you can get a little carried away with yourself if you’re not careful [and] if you don’t have someone challenging you,” Jeff explained.

Keep in mind, he’s been in the business for 40 years and still meets with a coach. “If you got a good coach, and so I’ve been doing it for 30 years, it’s just like having a coach at the gym — it keeps you focused and it keeps you accountable.”

For Sean, who officially joined the family business eight years ago, he knew a coach would help but didn’t exactly know how at first. Now it’s clear. “He challenges me — I have to show up with certain things to talk about. Challenging me is the big thing. Like, ‘Why are you doing this?’ I have to explain it; I have to go through my logic about it,” he said.

He finds it essential to step out of the business, the day-to-day grind, and think long-term about the business.

“You don’t get tunnel vision. It’s like I’m jumping on an airplane — I’m looking over everything with him. I get that 1,000-foot view on everything: Long term strategy, what really matters, how should I spend my time, what are my real priorities?” Sean said. “It helps prioritize myself and what all my managers are doing, too.”

Experiences

If the Fortins had a mantra, it would be the famous line from author B.J. Neblett: “We are the sum total of our experiences.”

The path to working at Fortin’s Supply was similar for both father and son. When Jeff was young, he didn’t know what he wanted to do career-wise, but he certainly knew he wanted to sail the Atlantic Ocean. But he had no money. His father, Laurence, loaned him the money to go to business school.

But even when finished, the itch to sail was still there. So he worked for an oil company, paid back his father and hit the ocean in a 35-foot boat. He went from St. Thomas to Bermuda to Portugal’s Azores islands and to France. When he got back, his father handed him a broom so he could sweep the floors of the family business.

Like his father, Sean didn’t know exactly what he wanted to do with his career after high school. He had worked in the family business during summers but he didn’t think it’d be his calling. Then, after a year at university, the bug hit him. He knew he wanted to be involved. He just didn’t know to what extent.

Outside Fortin’s Auto Supply on Airport Rd. in Chilliwack, B.C.

He worked in other industries during summer breaks. But as time went on, it just felt right to get into the Fortin’s business. But when he talked to his dad, Jeff felt his son didn’t have enough real-world experience. Sure, he’d spent his summers working away. But Jeff was keen on Sean venturing out and working more, gaining new experiences and then bringing that level of knowledge back with him to the family business.

In other words, his young career mindset would be moulded only by his experience within Fortin’s if he only worked here. By taking on different opportunities, he’d gain insights into how other companies operate — what their procedures are and why they do things a certain way.

“Working somewhere else would let me get other ideas outside of how we do things so I wouldn’t just come back and think, ‘The way we do it, it’s right because we’ve always done it that way,’” Sean explained.

“We’ve been around since 1946. My dad’s been progressive — he changed things. It’s always good to have an open mind.”

So he worked in an accounting firm doing accounts payable and the like. He spent three years working at Modern Sales’ head office in Barrie, Ontario.

“I enjoy the relationships,” Sean said. “I’ve got a lot of mentors through Modern Sales, with other jobbers; it has really helped me out a lot. It can be a very friendly industry. I think we’re lucky in that way. And customers — a lot of friendly customers.”

Sean considers Ferguson a mentor. So seeing this award go to Sean gives Ferguson a sense of pride.

“He’s worked very hard at a number of different things in his life — his education and his knowledge of the way the business works; finance and all of those various things that you need to do to run a business,” Ferguson said. “He’s worked very hard at that to make sure that the fourth generation isn’t where it ends.”

Transition

Fortin’s is transitioning. Jeff is stepping back, working about 50 per cent in the business, as Sean increases his role. He now runs the operations part of the company.

“My dad was very upfront of saying, ‘Don’t feel any pressure. No one has to do this,’” Sean recalled. He has two other siblings and neither had an interest in the family business.

But as Sean expressed interest, Jeff began the process of making way.

“There comes a time where you have to move over. And with my experience with Modern Sales, I’ve seen quite a few family transitions, and they’re not easy,” Jeff said.

Indeed, he’s seen some good transitions and some where there were difficulties. Two problems he’s seen are either the parent leaves too quickly — or doesn’t leave quickly enough. The latter is the most common issue.

“More often, I’ve seen fathers hang around too long and stifle the son or daughter and stifle the company,” Jeff said. “I’ve seen the problems come in when the father doesn’t want to move aside. He’s liking what he does and so he just wants to come and play in his playpen.”

Sometimes, the kid taking over the business is in a bit of a rush to grab the wheel. Sometimes there are disagreements on how to do things.

It’s a road Jeff knows well. He’d been through the process before with his father, except he was in the position Sean is now. The experience works in the family’s favour.

Kyle Bury, outside sales and account manager

“I had the exact same thing with my father, too. But dad was pretty good at moving aside,” Jeff said.

That doesn’t mean the transition process is sunshine and rainbows. There are disagreements, both admit. But it’s working out well.

“I think Sean has seen that this gradual process has been good. It’s given Sean the foundation that he has now so that he is very well equipped to take Fortin’s to the next level.”

The staff knows Sean is in charge of the day-to-day. “They don’t come to me anymore. They know that Sean makes the calls,” Jeff said.

Ferguson has watched the process unfold. “It’s not always easy in family business to transition from one generation to another,” he said. “We’ve seen this happen through multiple families who’ve done it successfully, but not everybody has that same success.”

It’s a rewarding experience for the elder Fortin to see his son take the reins. “And he’s putting his fingerprints on where we’re going and what we’re doing.”

One example would be texting with customers. While many shops are familiar with texting with clients, few may text with their jobber.

Customers can send a list of items needed or a photo — they find it saves time from transcribing numbers or having to describe items. Not to mention reducing miscommunication. It’s an idea Sean got from another Jobber of the Year, Doug Borland at Western Bearing and Auto Parts in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.

“So many people, regardless of age, are comfortably texting and using cell phones,” Sean explained. “It’s a universal thing now. And the idea that you could text and a customer is not on hold — I was all over that because of time savings for the customer or time savings for staff.”

And everything Sean has achieved has been earned, Jeff pointed out. He hasn’t handed his son anything — Sean had to prove his worth. It’s the same thing Jeff’s father did for him.

“So Sean has been given an opportunity to, just like in a public company, earn shares in the company,” Jeff explained. “So if Sean does well and makes good decisions, he’s going to buy me out quicker.”

Jen Bartha, janitorial sales and account manager

Advice

A question posed to every Jobber of the Year winner is what advice they would give their industry peers.

For Sean, it was simple: It’s all about your people. “Take care of your staff. Invest in your people and talk to them.”

That advice is evident from the number of long-term staff Fortin’s Supply has. “I really enjoy seeing our staff grow. We’ve got a number of people who started here as drivers and then now they’re managers, they’re key outside salespeople or key inside salespeople,” Sean said. “And it’s cool to be here and see people grow and then start mentoring other people too. That’s really rewarding.”

Jeff agreed but had one other important tip. “Take the time and effort to work on the business. Don’t be buried in it all the time.”

After nearly 50 years in the automotive aftermarket, industry veteran Kevin Judge will call it a career at the end of 2022.

NTN Bearings, where he is a brand ambassador for the company’s NTN automotive aftermarket business unit, made the announcement.

After 40 years in the aftermarket, working in sales, marketing and management executive roles, Judge joined NTN in 2015 as the eastern regional sales manager. In 2018 he took on the role of vice president of sales and marketing for the automotive aftermarket where he grew the business. It was in January this year that he transitioned to the brand ambassador role to provide intelligence and guidance.

He has been a mainstay of aftermarket groups, such as the Auto Care Association, Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association and Automotive Sales Council. He was inducted into the Federated Auto Parts Vendor Hall of Fame in 2020.

“NTN’s automotive aftermarket business owes a great debt to Kevin,” said Charles E. Harris, vice president of automotive aftermarket at NTN. “Having Kevin remain on as the brand ambassador for the last year has been integral to enabling a smooth transition for the leadership of our team. I personally want to thank Kevin for being a trusted advisor and wish him a long, happy and well-deserved retirement.”

An automotive repair shop owner was one of two people killed and three injured around the Greater Toronto Area.

Shakeel Ashraf was killed at the shop, one of two locations of MK Auto Repairs, in Milton, Ontario, according to media reports.

The same gunman also killed a Toronto Police officer during his lunch break while on a training exercise in Mississauga.

According to the Toronto Star, Ashraf had also just bought a new body shop.

“He has been our go-to guy for any issues with the car, any information on cars, not only for me, for my children as well. A loving, just an affectionate family man,” one woman who didn’t want to be identified told CP24, a Toronto-based all-news television station.

Ashraf leaves behind a wife and two girls.

“He was everybody’s mechanic,” said Sameera Ali, a Milton councillor, according to The Star. “He would help whenever he could, whoever he could.”

Police said in a news release that they were called to the business at around 2:50 p.m. on Monday. They said Ashraf died at the scene. Two others were injured during the shooting. As of Tuesday, they were both in critical and serious condition. Police didn’t identify them, though one told CTV he was hit in the leg. He also said the alleged gunman worked at the shop a few months ago for about a week.

The suspect was later shot and killed by police in Hamilton.

Ashraf’s funeral was Wednesday.

Charley Johnson has been awarded the Triangle Award from the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA).

The CEO of OptiCat LLC received the association’s highest honor in the vehicle supplier industry.

“For more than 45 years, the Triangle Award has been given periodically to that person or persons, or organization, whom MEMA and our divisions choose to honor for selfless contribution to the vehicle supplier industry,” said MEMA president and CEO Bill Long.

He further highlighted Johnson’s decades of “exceptional leadership” and noted the dedication he has given to the supplier industry. These qualities represent the spirit of the Triangle Award.

“[Johnson] has never missed an opportunity to promote, protect and advance the automotive industry, the automotive aftermarket and pushback against government over-reach,” Long continued. “Perhaps his most lasting contribution is the work he has done working quietly behind the scenes, to find paths of collaboration and common ground, leading to a win-win for industry stakeholders and businesses.”

The Triangle Award is handed out after a selective process. It is not an annual award but one that is presented when candidates deserve to be recognized. Specifically, those who have worked tirelessly, behind the scenes, out of the spotlight and whose contributions have advanced the supplier industry, MEMA’s announcement said.

The supplier side of the automotive aftermarket is mourning the loss of Steve Handschuh, former president and chief executive officer of the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) died Aug. 22

He retired at the end of 2018 with the announcement citing health concerns and a desire to properly transition the organization’s leadership. He also served as president and CEO of the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA), a division of MEMA, when he joined the organization in 2006 before taking over as head of the parent organization in 2013.

Upon his retirement, he was succeeded by Bill Long. Like Handschuh, Long was head of AASA and took over as MEMA’s leader.

Handschuh, a Baltimore native, spent more than 40 years in the automotive aftermarket. He started as an outside salesman for Mighty Auto Parts, eventually working his way up to vice president of sales and marketing. He also worked with NAPA Auto Parts/Genuine Parts Co. for 18 years, including serving as president of NAPA from 1998-2004. He was also commercial senior vice president at AutoZone.

In 2018, Handschuh received the organization’s top honour with the MEMA Triangle Award in 2018. It recognizes vision, passion and dedication to the interests of the automotive industry.

“MEMA and our industry have lost a great one. Steve was a dynamic leader, consummate professional, and friend to all who worked with and for him at MEMA, and he left a tremendous legacy from his leadership. He will be mourned by the entire MEMA family, both employees and membership,” Long said. “Steve was a man of integrity and always spoke highly of his wife Joann and children, making them his top priority. He was deeply involved in serving in his local Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall and helping its young community. As a son of Charm City, Steve was a lifelong Orioles fan. Steve was also passionate about music and was undoubtably a superfan of The Beatles.”

Kiyo Nonomura

Though long retired, many in the automotive aftermarket are feeling the loss of a good friend.

Kiyoshi, or Kiyo, Nonomura died last week at the age of 89.

Ken Coulter, president of Specialty Sales & Marketing, passed on the news to industry colleagues shortly after. He called Nonomura “probably one of the nicest men to pass through our industry.”

According to Coulter, Nonomura suffered a stroke. His obituary noted that Nonomura died peacefully on August 2 at Brampton Civic Hospital in southern Ontario.

He was a shipper receiver in Lethbridge and worked his way up to Vice President of Purchasing for an automotive aftermarket distributor in Toronto. He was well respected in the industry and was known as a shrewd but fair negotiator. His role allowed him to travel to many places around the world, and Kim was often able to accompany him.

Nonomura was born in Vancouver on October 20, 1932. He married Kim in 1954 and they moved to the Greater Toronto Area in 1969. He worked his way up from a shipper/receiver in Lethbridge to vice president of purchasing in the automotive aftermarket.

“He was well respected in the industry and was known as a shrewd but fair negotiator,” his obituary stated.

He is survived by his wife, his sons Kent and Kevin and his grandchildren David, Michael and Robert. He will be missed by his sister Audrey Nishikawa and also by his many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be scheduled.

The 2022 SEMA Businesswomen’s Network (SBN) All-Female Vehicle Build is underway, ready to be completed in late October and just in time for the SEMA Show.

The Ford Bronco arrived at the SEMA Garage in Diamond Bar, California earlier this year. The build is a project that will shine a light on women in the aftermarket industry.

SBN volunteers began by disassembling the vehicle and working on modified suspension, wheel and tires. The Bronco is now on its way to the SEMA Garage in Detroit where final accessories will be installed, including enhanced electrical, lighting, exhaust, intake and wrap.

“We are proud to showcase the careers, talents and skills of women in the automotive aftermarket through this one-of-a kind build,” said Nicole Bradle, SEMA SBN director. “In doing so, the SBN paves an exciting pathway for women builders and industry professionals to come together and showcase their contributions to this industry.”

This campaign marks the 10-year anniversary of SBN’s first award-winning all-female build. It’s a highly anticipated build for the fall SEMA Show, which runs from Nov. 1-4 in Las Vegas.

The final reveal is scheduled for November 1.

Your name and title: John Stacey and Joseph Graham, owners

Shop name: Stagra Automotive Limited

Location: We moved to Greely, Ontario 30 years ago

Number of employees: We currently have 6 employees. At one time, we had 27 employees with 3 locations in Ottawa including snow removal.

When did you open your shop? August 1972

Tell me an interesting fact about your shop: There are only two shops left in the City of Ottawa that have a full automotive machine shop as well as general repairs.

What, if anything, do you specialize in? We do full automotive repairs, Fleet work, custom hot rod and engine building.

Who is your main parts supplier? Hosie & Brown Auto Electric and E.R.I. Incorporated

What has been your biggest challenge(s) as a shop recently? Finding dedicated and reliable employees, parts supply shortages and dealing with COVID-19.

John Stacey and Joseph Graham, owners of Stagra Automotive

What’s your biggest success story in the last year? That, as an essential service, we have survived. We have some amazing customers who have navigated the waters of the door being closed and keeping everyone safe.

How has COVID-19 impacted your business? How have you adapted? Our sales are down about 30% from pre-COVID but still have work and were able to keep our employees. We had huge costs with sanitizing fogger, gloves, masks and cleaning supplies. We kept the front door locked and did the majority of conversations through calls, texts, emails and photos.

What kinds of digital technology are you currently using/implementing? We have three computers and three hand-held scanner devices. Online diagnostics from AllData.

If you could see one change in the aftermarket, what would it be? Better pricing. In some cases, OEM is now cheaper than aftermarket on a lot of parts. You spend much time comparing prices to stay competitive.

Name a part/product you and your team have been are particularly recently and why? We are currently in process of doing a restoration on a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette. New technology with a classic body. It is currently at the body shop and will be completed once it is returned to us.

Anything else you would like to share about your shop? Our slogan is “Your one stop automotive and light truck repair shop.” We are a one-of-a-kind shop in Ottawa now. We have learned that you cannot please everyone no matter how hard you try but we pride ourselves in being honest with our customers. We have second, third generation customers. From being in business for 50 years we have made some great friends.

The Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association (HDMA) has named Collin Shaw president and chief operating officer.

HDMA is the commercial vehicle supplier division of the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA).

Shaw took on the role effective March 22. He brings 15 years of experience in the mobility industry from the automotive and commercial vehicle sectors, according to the announcement. He has worked for global companies and brands, with roles in marketing, communications, strategy, digital solutions, and business development.

Most recently, he was responsible for North American business strategy at ZF Group.

The industry will need to address technological change over the next decade, including electrification, autonomy and the internet of things, noted MEMA president and CEO Bill Long. So bringing someone in with experience across different mobility sectors to lead the association was key.

“With his unique perspective and skillset, coupled with an already high-performing team at HDMA, Collin will support our supplier members, move the industry forward, and keep HDMA at the forefront of policy decisions,” Long said.

“The suppliers and manufacturers within the heavy-duty vehicle industry are the backbone of innovation and technology, transforming how goods, people and services are transported,” Shaw said. “Now, more than ever, vehicle suppliers need a powerful voice in Washington and a platform for industry dialogue and change. In the wake of worker shortages, inflation, and the transformation in technologies to achieve zero emissions, I am committed to working with the HDMA Board of Directors and staff to build on the strong tradition of our association.”

Jason Herle will take over as the chief executive officer of Fountain Tire.

The move is effective May 2022. It was announced during the company’s annual Store Owners Convention in B.C. this past weekend. He will take over from current CEO Brent Hesje, who has been in the position since 2005.

Herle has been with Fountain Tire for 28 years. According to the company, he started his career with them as an operations manager before moving into areas of real estate, expansion and wholesale. He served as senior vice president of marketing, information systems and supply chain from 2019-2021, after which he was named chief operating officer. A chartered professional accountant, Herle has also served on the board of directors of the Western Canada Tire Dealers, is an external board member of Glassmasters Auto Glass and is a volunteer with Junior Achievement, a non-profit youth organization.

As for Hesje, he will provide ongoing leadership to the company as executive chair of the board of directors. The company said he will give oversight to the board and mentorship to the CEO.

“Serving as CEO since 2005, Hesje is known for building a culture of trust, integrity, transparency and respect within the company. His passion to advance Fountain Tire’s ownership model, in which the majority of managers own equity in their stores, has been a key driver of the company’s expansion. His dedication to a partnership philosophy across the organization has further advanced local business relationships and developed community leaders throughout,” the announcement said.

“Jason is the perfect candidate to lead Fountain Tire,” Hesje said in a statement. “As the company’s third CEO in the last 30 years, he has a legacy of seasoned leadership behind him. With the momentum of a strong business, powerful network and talented team, he has a bright future ahead. Jason’s experience throughout the organization provides a perspective that few others could bring to the role. I look forward to working closely with him in this new phase of leadership.”

Herle acknowledged the honour it was to him to become the next CEO of Fountain Tire. “As I follow in the footsteps of great leaders before me, I am excited to build upon the foundation they’ve established as we continue to live our core purpose: Helping people get there — safely, sustainably and successfully. I am grateful to Brent and the board for this opportunity and delighted to lead Fountain Tire’s next chapter.”

He died at the age of 67 on Jan. 25.

He joined the aftermarket at H&S Supply in Kenora, Ont., where he was born in 1954, as a teenager. He packed up and headed to Calgary in 1976 where he joined Bob Dickie at Superior Automotive.

In 1978, he was recruited by John Sutherland to join NAPA. A few years later in 1983, Crewe joined Bumper to Bumper, which was an associate program of Acklands Ltd.

Crewe was instrumental in growing the BTB associate program in Western Canada, through both Acklands Grainger & Uni-Select Inc.

In 2012, Crewe joined JET Equipment & Tools, owned by SureWerx. He wrapped up his career with The ERI Group before retiring in 2014.

SureWerx announced it will make a donation to the Diabetes Society in Crewe’s name.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 38 years, Cindy, whom he met at the Calgary Stampede in 1979; daughter, Celina (Collin); granddaughter, Charlotte; mother, Dorothy; sisters: Karen, Kathy and Cheryl Lynn.

Crewer did not wish to have a service. There will be a celebration of life planned for the future.

The family wished to thank the staff at Foyer Lacombe Hospice, who provided care and kindness to Crewe and his family over the last few months of his life.

After going through more than two dozen nominations and discovering all the great things Canadian shop owners are doing, CARS Magazine is proud to present the 2021 Shop of the Year award to Master Mechanic High Park in Toronto.

The shop is owned by Josie Candito who runs it with business partners Mike Tavares and Rui Silvestre. While the latter two are also technicians in the shop, Candito is an accountant by trade. While working in the head offices of Master Mechanic, she seized an opportunity to open her own shop within the franchise.

We’ll be preparing a full-length feature to run online, in addition to a feature in our print magazine. Stay tuned to our site in the coming weeks and keep an eye out for our December issue to learn more about Candito and the MMHP team.

The shop was picked based on its commitment to tech training, investment in the business and dedication to the community. The award is sponsored by Milwaukee Tool, which provided a prize pack valued at $2,500.

(from left) Matt Gibbons, Milwaukee senior national account manager – automotive/rental, Mike Tavares, Josie Candito, Rui Silvestre and Adam Hicks, Milwaukee transportation sales specialist, GTA. They’re joined by Charlie, chief dog officer (front)

About the winner

Candito, an accountant by background who worked at the head office of Master Mechanic, opened the doors to the west-end Toronto shop in 1999.

“I guess I had the entrepreneurial spirit in me; to be on my own,” Candito said. “When you’re talking to customers and you’re building something, I guess there was something in me that I just loved it. And when this location came up, I just loved the area.”

Candito ensures that her staff are always treated well, as equals and taken care of. “At our shop, everybody’s important. We’re all equal. Nobody’s better than anybody else. We all work hard, and there’s no feeling of ‘I’m superior to anybody,’” she said. “Obviously, there are leaders. But nobody’s just sitting in the back room. We have to lead by example. And not only in our community, but for our employees. We all have to be role models. So those are all things and I’m very particular about.”

Master Mechanic High Park, at the corner of Howard Park and Dundas Street West in Toronto.

Helping the community

Close to Candito’s heart is her surrounding community. It was her dedication to those in need and ensuring the success of those around her that separated her from the other nominees for this award.

“I come from a very humble family. My parents are immigrants and seeing how they struggled, I always wanted to make sure that I could help them and the community,” she said.

To highlight just a few, Candito works with The Redwood, a women’s shelter to help empower women to start over again. She also works with local non-profits like the Parkdale Food Bank and Stone Soup Network, which shares products and services with those in need.

When COVID-19 hit, she did what she could to encourage people to shop locally and support local businesses that were struggling due to pandemic-related restrictions and lockdowns.

“It’s so important to remember to support local. We support each other as business leaders,” she said.

Rui Silvestre, Mike Tavares and Josie Candito of Master Mechanic High Park are presented with the Shop of the Year plaque by owners of CARS magazine Peter Bulmer and Delon Rashid

‘I’m different’

Candito recognizes that she may be quirky and not your typical shop owner. But that’s what makes her stand out in the aftermarket community. Her approach to the business, as she told her business partners Tavares and Silvestre, is what she feels is best.

“This is who I am and they know I’m different, and this is me,” Candito said. “They supported me 100 per cent. It was important to me. And if you want the community to invest in you, then you need to give back. You need to be there for them.”

Quick to adapt. Growth in tough times. Deep community relationships. A tight-knit leadership team. The Unified Parts Group is the 2021 Jobber the Year

The post Jobber of the Year: ‘One big family’ appeared first on Auto Service World.

]]>

Mark Krasicki has surrounded himself with the people he trusts most. People he trusts to offer customers the best experience they can find. People who strengthen relationships with customers and suppliers. People who have helped deliver 28 straight years of growth. People who help the company find new opportunities.

These people make up the team of The Unified Parts Group, which operates five jobber stores in Saskatchewan.

It’s because of their willingness to take on challenges, find new ways to grow, adapt and respond quickly — be it to a new community, new sector or a global pandemic — that they are the 2021 Jobber of the Year.

The people Krasicki surrounded himself are those with whom he couldn’t have a closer relationship. He has his two sons working beside him — Monte and Trent, both as vice presidents in the company. And as senior vice president and chief operating officer is Scott Shkopich, his best friend since third grade.

“We’re like one big family,” Shkopich described.

Having your kids working in your store is a tradition that probably dates back to the dawn of the automotive jobber. Including someone you’ve known for pretty much your entire life? That’s icing on the cake.

“It’s very invaluable because you always know that he’s got the company as if it was his own and he’s always got the company’s back,” Mark said of having Shkopich next to him. “So it’s very comforting. You know the job’s always going to be done to the best of his ability every time.”

The business owner alone can’t lead the success of a jobber, he added. A strong team is needed.

“You have to surround yourself with good people, trusting people and people that are going to be taking the company in the right direction,” Mark said.

Scott Shkopich, senior vice president and chief operating officer

He places such a high value on having a trusting relationship with his staff because it’s those people who will be charged with building, retaining and enhancing relationships between the business and customers.

“We continue to build relationships,” Mark said as the key to his business’ success. Rarely, he added, has his business lost a customer to the competition. “The only time we usually lose customers is when they retire or pass away.”

The ability to build relationships is apparent to Roy Moussa, NAPA’s western vice president.

“And those relationships don’t happen by accident. They happen because he built trust with his ASP customers, by delivering the best value and service every single day. His team goes far above and beyond the call of duty,” he observed.

Alvin Chibi, general sales manager in Alberta for NAPA Auto Parts, nominated Mark for Jobber of the Year. They’ve known each other for about 25 years, starting back when Chibi was a supplier rep. He’s seen their business grow over the years and how consistently they serve their customers.

“They’re community-minded people; they’re family-oriented people. They built a great team,” he said.

Moussa said the team at Unified can create such great relationships because they can connect with just about anyone.

“They’re so ingrained in their markets that they become part of the fabric,” he added. “So when you think of automotive parts in the markets that they work in, you think of NAPA. That is what has really helped grow that business over the years.”

Monte and Trent Krasicki, vice presidents at The Unified Parts Group

History

The Unified Parts Group, part of the NAPA family, has five stores in Saskatchewan, with its head office in Prince Albert, the province’s third-largest city.

Mark began his journey in the automotive aftermarket in the late 1980s. He was “talked into” managing a NAPA store in Melfort. While there, an opportunity came up to become the partner of a store in Prince Albert. So he took on the opportunity in 1993.

From there, it was growth.

In August 1994, a second branch was opened in Meadow Lake, about 2.5 hours northwest of Prince Albert. In 1997, the company expanded to Melfort, about an hour southeast of Prince Albert. Two years later, they bought the assets of Fort Ignition from UAP, NAPA’s parent, which had previously acquired the company.

In 2008, they added the Traction banner, which serves the heavy-duty truck market.

In 2015, the company adopted the CMAX banner, NAPA’s line of auto body products.

In 2017, they bought a location in Tisdale, about 90 minutes east of Prince Albert. That same year, they moved into a brand new head office in Prince Albert. In 2013, Mark bought out his remaining partners to be the sole owner of the company.

Then in March this year, the company expanded into the second biggest city in the province, taking over a location in Saskatoon.

The staff at the Meadow Lake location

“We’re just finishing our 28th year of consecutive growth. As an entrepreneur, that’s a pretty motivating thing,” Mark said as to his reason for sticking around the aftermarket. “We’re probably 70-75 per cent wholesale on our mix. We have strong relationships with our wholesale customers. And when you have those relationships, you’re friends with those customers. It’s easier to do business with them and you enjoy going to work. And part of my entrepreneurial side is, obviously, Type A — I like to win. And so we continue to grow with that directive.”

Unified scores itself highly when it comes to building relationships with its customers. And the proof is in the pudding.

“I think it definitely has to do with our relationship-building with our customers,” Shkopich said of the reason they stand out from their competition. “How we treat them, what we do for them and how we go about helping them when they’re having challenges and helping them solve their problems. We want to be their problem-solver and help them with those issues.”

Because, after all, you need to have a vested interest in helping your customers grow. “Because if they grow, you grow as a company,” he added. “It becomes twofold.”

Their customers aren’t just customers in the traditional sense either, Trent noted. “They become a friend around here and that’s why we keep them life-long.”

No matter the challenge — a pandemic, a recession — the company manages to find ways “to persevere and to continue to grow and to continue to provide value to their communities. That is what has been special,” Moussa said.

“The formula is actually quite simple to say and incredibly difficult to execute: Create a value proposition that means something to your customers and deliver against your promises every day. If you can do those two things you will win,” he added. “Mark has found a way to do that in every market and, quite frankly, in every segment of the business that he works in.”

The staff at the Tisdale location

The people

As noted, Mark has surrounded him with people personally close to him to bring professional success to his company.

Both his kids grew up in the business. “Well, from Grade 9 to Grade 12, it wasn’t voluntary,” Trent joked. “After that it became voluntary.”

He decided to stick around because he enjoyed what he was doing and saw an opportunity to be part of a great company that happened to be run by his father. “We work well together as a family,” he said of the dynamic. “There’s always ups and downs but it’s really great.”

His brother Monte had a similar story. “I’d get picked up by a delivery vehicle and brought to the store to work. I grew up in it and enjoyed doing it,” he said about turning a high school job into a career. “Then I slowly progressed in the sales side and enjoyed that part.”

When it came time to expand the business on the auto body side, Monte jumped at the chance to lead that growth.

Mark convinced Shkopich to join him around the year 2000. He was working in the business world at the time. Shkopich started off working in the store and in outside sales.

“It was about 2008 when I moved in to be Mark’s righthand man, and we’ve continued to grow from there,” he said.

The staff at the Melfort location

For Chibi, the family aspect shines through in the company and with the customers.

“These are truly local Saskatchewan born and bred people,” he said. “They are a very, very close-knit family. And that’s the way they treat their customers as well — as family.”

Chibi used the example of the NAPA privilege trips. Mark’s team brings along many customers and they spend almost all their time together — be it eating dinner, having drinks or enjoying the pool. “They have fun together. That’s the mentality that they have.”

At the end of the day, they’re genuine, Moussa said. “When they give you a promise, they fulfill their promise. They’ve got a tremendous amount of pride in what they do.”

But, Mark pointed out, the success of The Unified Parts Group isn’t because of the four of them. They have a strong team of people from management all the way down.

Brock Nahorniak is the company’s general manager, while Ken Hambleton handles warehouse and logistics. Both are key members of the senior leadership team. Then there’s also administration manager Denise Bremner, who has been with the company for 26 years. Meanwhile, Shelley Shirley has been the branch manager in Melfort since 1997. And that type of tenure is typical, Mark pointed out — many staff members have been around for 15-26 years.

“They’ve done a heck of a job through this pandemic that’s for sure,” Trent said of the staff throughout the company’s five locations as they dealt with the effects of COVID-19.

“The pressure on the counter staff at all locations was tremendous and they handled it like heroes and what really helped us step through,” Mark added.

COVID-19

Indeed, working through COVID-19 has presented a unique set of challenges, whether it’s for delivery staff, those on the counter or the leadership team.

For example, it was sometimes unpredictable as to what measures shops were taking in protecting themselves and clients, so caution and flexibility were needed.

“As an outside salesperson, you never know from shop to shop what it’s going to be like,” Shkopich said.

“For a while, there was a lockdown everywhere. But when the lockdowns started to slow down, our essential business team was able to start resuming normal business,” Mark explained. “For our walk-in DIY groups, we had protective Plexiglas at all locations, along with masking and social distancing, and a really regimented cleaning schedules.”

In terms of shifting how to do business, much of it switched to using the telephone. For a company that values in-person engagement, it was a change. But they were quick to adapt to those challenges.

“I had some video conferencing, but a lot of our customer base isn’t into the video conferencing or the virtual meetings yet. So a lot of it was just keeping tabs with them by phone,” Mark said.

And Unified saw double-digit growth in 2020, despite the fact that driving slowed to a relative crawl and aftermarket retail numbers tumbled that year.

“The only report card with anything in business is results and we experienced over a double-digit growth during 2020. Many of the things that we implemented and approaches that we took helped us achieve those results and give us the confidence — financially, morally and business-wise — to take on another challenge like we did in Saskatoon,” Mark said of their expansion this year. “Even under a pandemic environment, we were able to persevere and continue to grow our business and grow our industry and our market.”

The natural follow-up question is: How? The company had always been ahead of the curve in technology. The pandemic just forced the team to lean on it a little more. The infrastructure was there; it was just a matter of maximizing its capabilities.

“It made us make sure that we were on top of our game and that side with our customers and our staff,” Trent observed. “I think that helped us to grow as well. We really relish that side of it.”

Being part of the NAPA family certainly helps, Shkopich pointed out.

“Being part of NAPA with its attraction programs, having the CMAX banner, having our suppliers support us — that has helped us grow. They’re always behind us. They’re a big factor and helping us achieve our success in where we want to go,” he said. “Yes, we’re self-driven but they’re also a big part of our success story.”

Technology

The Unified Parts Group has invested big time in technology over the years. Rather than apply cookie-cutter systems in the company, they’ve created their own in some cases.

“We created our own CRM program that helped communicate between our sales team, our senior management team and our branch management team. That was something that we implemented that specifically works for our group,” Mark said.

While Genuine Parts Company — which owns NAPA Auto Parts — has a server solution in place for those who own multiple stores, Unified added its own on top of that. The five stores can connect with each other quickly to check on whatever they need in other locations.

“So when you’re in the head office branch or in a hotel or wherever you are, you can be basically doing anything from your laptop that you would normally do inside the office of one of the stores,” Mark said.

Customers can also connect directly to the store online and place orders. So instead of the outside salesperson taking the order on their tablet or taking notes, they can guide the customer to place the order themselves.

As noted, the company had video conferencing technology in place already, but kicked it up a notch as the pandemic made face-to-face meetings impossible.

“During that time, we’ve also been able to recognize how important it is for all aspects of our company — not only the sales division, but even with ops or administrative staff — that we’re trying to make sure that our people are using

as often as possible,” Mark added.

The company also didn’t sit around and let things get stale during the pandemic. On the body shop side, for example, the company implemented software that allows staff to monitor levels of liquids remotely. Checks are done twice a week and orders are taken as needed without having to be onsite.

Body shop

During the early days of The Unified Parts Group, you could say the company dabbled on the auto body repair side of things. They had a little more than a handful of customers. But in their never-ending quest for growth opportunities, they saw potential in the body shop side of the aftermarket.

“It kind of got to a point in some of our locations where we had the majority of the market in the automotive side already and we needed to look at something different to grow in,” Monte explained. “And that was something that we had lightly touched before. We saw opportunity there and decided to go for it.”

The company now serves 27 body shops. This side of the business represents 20% of Unified’s revenue, according to Mark.

“We dealt with a couple larger shops already and we continued to see growth with them. Through conversation, we just explored the opportunities that were given to us to go into some of the other shops and build the relationship from there,” Shkopich said.

“They’ve done incredibly well at growing their business on the CMAX paint and body side,” Chibi praised. “They bring different thoughts and innovations to their business all the time.”

Industry, community involvement

An important consideration for the Jobber of the Year Award is how much they work to improve this industry and their community. The Unified Parts Group is fully dedicated to both.

On the industry side of things, the company is involved with the Automotive Industries Association of Canada’s Saskatchewan board, the Entrepreneurial Organization, the NAPA Associate Advisory Council and the Saskatchewan Association of Automotive Repairers.

During a time when right to repair is a critical issue and when business in general is changing, being part of these groups is essential, Mark said.

“What’s important is to grow as a company and to grow professionally and as an individual,” he said.

In the community, the company is a member of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, the Chamber of Commerce and a major sponsor of the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League. They also help with local charities and food drives, local minor sporting teams and events like car clubs in their communities.

From Mark’s point of view, every community needs businesses to be philanthropic and support local initiatives. If businesses like his don’t support minor hockey or charity drives, then they don’t prosper.

“We’re lucky that all our locations are in very progressive markets and progressive communities. We want to continue to support them,” he said. “Hospitals, health care, long term care — those are the types of things that’s also high on our radar. Being community-based and community-minded has been part of the culture of our corporation since Day 1.”

Simply put, they’re community leaders, Chibi said. “They have team members working in each of their communities and living in each of their communities. On the business side, they’re leaders; on the community side, they’re leaders as well.”
